News / Create a custom splash image for Assist!
« on: Sunday, December 01, 2013, 00:31:15 AM »
For the next release of Assist we have been planning to allow users to submit artwork to be shown when America's Army is launched (splash screen). Starting today and going for 1 week (ending the 7th) we will be accepting and collecting submissions to be put into a vote and the winning artwork will be used for 1 month. After that 1 month, we will have a new contest.

The reason behind this is to show off our users creativity and to get some interesting discussions going. Just to be clear, this is what we are talking about:

With all that said, here are the guidelines:
- Must include "AAO25.com" or "www.AAO25.com" somewhere visible in the graphic.
- Suggestions for other text would be "Battletracker.com", "America's Army" and "Assist". These are not required but any text outside of these suggestions may be rejected.
- You may submit as many works as you want and refine them until the due date (7th of December).
- The graphic must be as large or larger than the original which is 349x211 pixels but no larger than 640x360.
- You are free to use any renders or artwork found on this site but renders/graphics from other games will be rejected. If asked nicely, ELiZ may make custom renders for characters/objects.
- The final graphic must be in indexed BMP format. Check your work in this format before submitting. Certain colors/gradients may not look good when converted.
- Graphics advertising specific clans/groups will be rejected.
- Feel free to use the Logo and GUI from the upcoming Assist v8, the links are below.

Since this is the first time we've done this, guidelines may change. Remember, the point of this is to have fun. Submit your works in this thread. Go!

Pay shipping in the US and it's yours. It's this model here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127306

It works fine, I just have no use for it and nobody's willing to buy it. I'd rather see it put to use than to scrap it.

News / AAO25 Scheduled Downtime
« on: Saturday, November 02, 2013, 22:42:17 PM »
I just wanted to inform everyone that due to a upgrade taking place on the VPS server that AAO25.com is hosted on, there will be some minimal downtime when everything gets moved. It it scheduled for the 5th of November. We will do a full backup before anything is done so nothing will get lost.

mAAp Project / AntiPortals
« on: Saturday, November 02, 2013, 16:44:48 PM »
Just a heads up to you guys (mostly to those of us working on AA3 maps) that are editing. Working on AA3 Alley, I added an AntiPortal via the editors button and it did absolutely nothing. It didn't occlude objects, even from inside of it. Playing around some more, I found that using the Add Special button and creating an AntiPortal that way DID work as it should. The only change here is that the brush is now dark green rather than the familiar orange. I don't know if this is just a problem on Alley or if it's an AA3 map problem or if it's a global issue.

Just a heads up to our loyal players, the hoster that runs Assist is having maintenance done and the services will be down between 10pm and 6am on the 9th of October.

I'm not sure what timezone this is, perhaps ELiZ or BiG Sergio could clue us in?

Feedback & Suggestions / AA3 Maps Discussion
« on: Saturday, September 28, 2013, 21:02:26 PM »
ELiZ has been hard at work flexing his skills to see if he can convert AA3 maps to 2.5. I must say, he's doing a damn good job and isn't too far from being done. Because of this, I thought I'd start some discussion on the remaining issues and perhaps to get some feedback on how to release this work.

The first thing you should do is vote in this thread's poll. I'm betting most people would like to see the AA3 maps but the downside is that currently, it would be at least a 250MB download. That does not include sounds which have yet to be worked on. If you vote no, please be sure to tell us why.

Assuming you would like to see these maps, I would like to see if people would like the maps converted as-is or if there's bugs that you would vote to be fixed. Perhaps there's a balancing issue or an area that shouldn't be accessed? Also, in AA3, many things were changed at the engine level and some stuff will have to be created by hand. 2 things I can think of will be the skybox and weather. We will need people to post screenshots on fog color/range as well as any other weather effects. What lighting should the level have? What kind of feel? Where should the spawnpoints be and what weapons should they have? What are the reportin locations? All of this stuff is up for discussion and can be changed as long as most players agree with it and it's tested.

So, have at it!

Here's a video of the current gameplay:

General Chat / JSON Statistics for Assist
« on: Monday, September 16, 2013, 18:44:54 PM »
Rapture came to me earlier asking for a way to have the number of players and number of servers passed on to other websites. So, I decided to export the stats from AAO25 into JSON format with some PHP code. Here it is for anyone to use:

http://aao25.com/stats/json.php

Example output:
Code: [Select]
{"players":"73","servers":"83","top server":"{ATAS} - TR - EU - SERVER","auth":"online","auth_time":"1379373722","downloads":"62,488","assist_ver":"7.48","assist_news":"Visit http:\/\/aao25.com for updates.","most_players":"132","most_players_time":"1379270942"}
Per the example above, stats are ordered as follows:
Players In-Game: 73 - [Will not be updated if auth is offline]
Servers Online: 83 - [Will not be updated if auth is offline]
Top Server: {ATAS} - TR - EU - SERVER - [Shows server with the most players, ill not be updated if auth is offline]
Authorization Status: online - [will show 'offline' when auth is down]
Authorization Last Online: 1379373722 - [unix timestamp, CST, -6 UTC, can be converted with PHP date();]
Assist Downloads: 62,488 - [Taken directly from SourceForge]
Assist Version: 7.48
Assist News: Visit http:\/\/aao25.com for updates - [News shown in the Assist client]
Most Players Online Ever: 132
Most Players Online Time: 1379270942 - [The unix timestamp that the 132 players were on, , CST, -6 UTC, can be converted with PHP date();]

News / Assist is back online!
« on: Friday, September 13, 2013, 23:47:54 PM »
With a LOT of work from ELiZ, a new version of Assist has been rolled out. This version reverts changes that were made in previous versions. Although we have tested this version, there may be unforeseen issues so please post them in this thread.

There is a new Terms of Service Agreement that you must read and agree to in order to start Assist. This is only shown once and every time Assist gets updated. Please read it to understand what Assist does and what is and is not allowed.

Thank you all for your overwhelming support and words of encouragement!

Visit the Info page on this site for a download link.

NOTES:
Server owners will have to re-download dedicated binaries to update Assist. These can be found on the Info page as well.

Bugs/Fix
On Linux you will have to set the flag to allow it to run, same for both client and server

News / Welcome back to AAO25.com
« on: Friday, September 13, 2013, 00:12:51 AM »
I just want to say a few things to everybody coming back. First and foremost, no more discussion of the last Assist version. It's been talked to death on here, Battletracker and the official AA forums. AAO25.com was not re-opened to discuss what happened, it was re-opened to discuss the future of this game for those that wish to continue playing it.

With that said, I want to dispel any conspiracy theories and give you some hard information on what's going on:
- None of the other developers, including myself, work for any governmental agency.
- The only personal data ever used/harvested by Assist is the username, email address and password that you choose to enter into the program and/or into Battletracker. This information has never been shared with anyone for any reason outside the developers. Passwords are stored on the Auth server with a special SHA-1 encryption that includes a salting method.
- Assist was not shut down to "hide evidence". It was shut down to avoid abuse of the system and to prevent any  non-relevant personal user data from being harvested.
- It's taken so long to bring back AAO25 and Assist because we have been discussing the best way to bring it back in a way that regains trust and ensures confidence in our users. Without you, our work is pointless. We didn't want to simply go back on the last update and let things go back to normal. We are fundamentally changing various features in Assist as well as introducing a TOS agreement that tells you, the user, what Assist is and what it does.
- Jonny has retired completely from the project. We all appreciate the work he's put into this program over the last 5+ years and he will be missed. He wished for me to post a public statement  when this site came back online:

Quote
The latest version of assist (7.47) included a new anti-cheat feature that allowed us to search peoples computers for cheats or hacks, This was done via an authenticated connection to the authorisation server. When you downloaded 2.5Assist from our site it was on the understanding that it was an installation and management client for AA2.5, I believe that this gave us a mandate to access and modify files on your computer that are directly related to AA2.5 and extended this definition to include cheats/hacks that are specifically designed for use with AA2.5
Unfortunately this new anti-cheat feature was rushed and not properly thought through and contained serious security flaws that meant it could have potentially been used to access files that were not directly related to AA2.5. I am not a professional software developer and only do this as a hobby for free, as such I have no qualifications for this type of work and was bound to make a serious mistake like this sooner or later.
I want to assure the whole Assist community that this latest feature was only live for less than a week and was only ever used on a very small group of know cheaters, Where it was used I am 100% certain that no files that were not related to AA2.5 were accessed and I am 100% certain that no personal information or data or anything else not relating to assist has been compromised.
I soon as I came to realised what a security/privacy threat this could have become I acted immediately to shutdown the system to prevent it being abused and removed the authorisation server making it impossible for this feature to be used again by anybody.
There has been talk of Trojans, spyware and backdoors being used but this is not the case, This was simply a function built into the assist client that could only be accessed via an authenticated connection to the Assist authorisation server. With the auth server now gone this security flaw is now completely removed and unusable to I can assure all of you are perfectly safe now.
When our server hosting company found out about this they did not want to have anything to do with us anymore so the AAO25.com forum was taken down, Some of the admin team are now working to get the site back up so they can discuss a way forward with the community.
I however will no longer be involved in this project, I have made a mistake and have lost the trust of the community, I no longer trust myself to develop software and will not being working on anymore projects in the future.
Some of the other admins have expressed an interest in removing said features from assist and continuing the project but that is up to them and community to decide.

News / Closing of Assist - Game Over
« on: Tuesday, September 10, 2013, 02:38:37 AM »
Assist was shut down rapidly to avoid system abuse. We are now talking about bringing it back.

I regret to inform you all that Assist has been shut down. I won't go into any details as to why this has happened. I wish I could have provided advanced notice but it was not possible. There are no plans to bring it back but I would not rule out the (remote) possibility of it coming back in the distant future. This forum will be moved to another host and will remain open as a place for discussion only.

a quote from JonnyM, project creator/leader:
Quote from: JonnyM
The Cheat/Hack coders kept pushing us and pushing us and to try and keep on top of things and detect the cheats they were using we had to develop some anti-cheat methods that were possibly crossing some legal boundrys in their usage. We're not really sure without taking legal advice but non of us want to risk getting prosecuted for working for free on a free game so the system has been shutdown.
