RIAA at it again
« on: Sunday, April 18, 2010, 15:35:56 PM »
Watch out the RIAA wants to send Government hackers to attack every computer in the world!

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/RIAA-MPAA-Illegal-downloads-Torrent,news-6496.html

Now this is getting ridiculous
http://www.osnews.com/story/23160/RIAA_MPAA_Want_Monitoring_Software_Border_Checks

In a time when the economy in America is in the toilet they want to spend money on this S***?

Woot for big government! (Just kidding Delta :D)

The read was interesting. I liked the Dr. Evil image. Too bad they're wasting their time on something that won't happen.

That's the first of many things. They would have to support all operating systems with this software. Viruses are characteristic, it's pretty easy to figure out where they are. But movies and music? They can be encoded at any rate so the file size can be anything, not to mention the file name. Also, how do they know you don't own the CD or DVD or Bluray? How could they possibly make it enforced on all computers? In order to do so I think it would have to be a mandatory patch to the Windows operating system like WGA but even then, that can be bypassed. There's just too many if's for this to even be considered. I hope they're not wasting tax payer money on it.

I actually have no problem with border checks. It's illegal to bring illegal things in or take them out, how is piracy any different? Again though, how do they know you don't own the CD's, DVD's or Bluray disc? I don't care what they do at the border since I don't ever go to it. I would imagine this would slow things down to have to check everybody's computer.

What if you are a doctor with medical files on your laptop? That's illegal for any one but the doctor and patient to see. So if they go snooping in EVERY ones files you are bound to do some thing illegal.

PLUS think of how long it takes to do a system wide scan of a computer. It took me 45minutes to scan 800-900gb with a quad core processor. And my moms dual core laptop took 2 hours to do a virus scan of 200gb....This would raise check times by DAYS.

I laughed at the monitoring software. That one is going to a flop like Microsoft Bob. Theres no way Im going to have some half-ass written software constantly scanning my hard drives.

But then again i do dual boot linux, so its fairly easy for me to lock access to the windows partition =)

Well, medical files... I would imagine those would be in some kinda spreadsheet or something and shouldn't be that large. I also can't think of a reason why a Doctor would have medical files on a laptop, that's pretty infringing as it is.

Check times, not my problem. Just like everything in life, if you want to do something you have to jump through the right hoops.

I'd like to know how they know you didn't attain the files legally. How can they tell two MP3 files apart? I think this model would do more harm than good. Plus, having more software, monitoring files at the ISP level would cause greater latencies.

Oh, and there is no way they'll ever get their spyware on a Linux computer. Microsoft can build it into the Windows kernel. But Linux being open source, I just don't see it happening. Besides, doesn't Windows already have stuff like this? Doesn't it check your computer for infringing files? Because I thought I read something when Windows Vista was coming out.

I don't think so. If it does, it's not very good at finding things  ::)
