General Chat / Error every time on startup

I am trying to help my friend with his AA2.5. It worked for a long time, but quit working after the first update. He is using Vista. I have deleted all the files and then Unzipped the files again. I have run as administrator. Every time it restarts, it runs the new updates and then when it finishes running the updates it says: "The program has stopped working...Windows will check for a solution." After that, you can't even open 2.5 Assist at all.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm stumped.
