[Help] Cmon smart people. You got this.
« on: Friday, June 18, 2010, 17:12:10 PM »
Alright.  So my desktop.  When I turn it on it starts up just fine. (for the most part..)  However.  After sometime, (the times always different..) the computer starts to beep.  It's one long beep and it doesn't stop.  After maybe 5 to 10 minutes the computer just shuts off.  I have no clue as to what it is because...  Well I just not smart like you guys.  Any help?
And some guy told me it was the RAM that had gone bad but then he changed his answer because I told him the computer started up and everything..

I've never known an OEM computer to warn about it but my first guess would be overheating. To test this, open the side panel and turn it on and don't do anything on it. If it doesn't beep or shuts down, then there's your answer. I know "shuts down" could be a quick BSOD and restart/power off. When memory goes bad, it's generally a lot of program crashes and seemingly random BSOD's.

I agree with spanky. I thought of overheating right away.

+3 for overheating. that beeping is the thermal protection warning you "oh noes we need less power scotty!" Best way to figure out whats up is to download real temp and do a quick pass of superPI 1m if it starts reaching the TJ max then shut down and figure out how to get better air flow. Which we can help you do if you provide pic's :P

Overheating definitely makes sense but, while I haven't seen every OEM computer there is, none of the ones I have seen "beep" when they get too hot. But yea, ignore my recommendation, and stress it. Instead of superpi, I would recommend OCCT Linpack:

It will heat up quick and stop if it gets too hot. If you can go 5-10 minutes, it's probably not overheating. If you can run it the whole hour, it's definitely not overheating.

I kinda always figured it was over heating..  (I live in Arizona..) and the desk we have kind of encloses the computer..  But it doesn't feel hot.  That's the thing..  And it can take anywhere from probably 1 minute to.. maybe 10 minutes to start beeping.  Then it's about 5 to 10 minutes till it actually shuts off.

And I'll do better than pictures. :D  Just give me awhile.. lol.

EDIT:
I'll do the pictures and video of the entire computer more tomorrow or sunday.  Not enough room in this room to actually get anything good..  But right now I'm doing a video of like the boot up and beep and stuff..

Unless you are touching the IHS of the cpu (which you shouldn't) you are not going to be able to tell if its over heating by touch.

What?  Short circuiting is bad for a computer? :o

Hmm..  I was at 35 minutes and I guess the camera died. :\
But you get most of the point with the video..  I'll go edit it now..
