Just found this yesterday and it's pretty nifty:

It checks for updates and beta updates of various programs.

I know this joke is getting old but I watched a certain movie again yesterday and couldn't help laughing my ass off when I saw someone that reminded me of what blueblaster might look like: (It's funny if you know what movie it is and a bit about the filming location)

I did some cleanup and added a couple boards thanks to KiLLaMaN. If there's anything you guys think should be done, post it up here or start a thread in this section.

They're made by the same company!

I want to see responses before I post proof :D

Hardware/Software / Bad Power Supply #1
« on: Tuesday, February 02, 2010, 18:03:45 PM »
I'll probably continue making these threads whenever I find new naughty power supplies so that's why I've named it #1.

This one came in a customers computer that I was doing some other work in. I did my regular cleaning and in doing so took out the motherboard and saw this:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/464376/headshot/power_supply/DSC05326.JPG

It looked about the same on the ATX connector on the motherboard. I found out it was a problem caused by small gauge wires on power supplies and sure enough this power supply had about half the gauge wire that most all the other ones I have laying around did. This power supply did power the customers computer and had no ill signs but this can show you that danger can sneak up on you. If they heated to the point of melting the wire insulation or ATX connector, there could have been a short or worse even a fire which in either case, you will have to buy new parts or perhaps a new computer. This is what a cheap power supply is, those $20-$30 ones you see online or in stores, this is how they get those costs down. Even though the power supply worked, seeing what it did, I won't allow it to power another computer again so I recycle it:

WARNING: Unless you know what you are doing DO NOT attempt to do the following! Discharge the PSU and let it sit several days to reduce electrical shock!

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/464376/headshot/power_supply/DSC05327.JPG

Now I could just take the whole thing in and recycle it as-is but I have to pay for that. Taking it apart does several things:
I get to keep the 80mm fan (I have 4 recycled PSU fans in my server)
I get to keep the screws (there's several 'standard' screws inside these)
I get money from metal recycling (not much but at least I don't have to pay to recycle it)
I get the wires that I can use for other projects (yea, small gauge but I'm talking about for custom fan wiring and whatnot)
Finally, less weight I have to pay for to recycle.

Now it's totally up to the consumer to choose what product they want but my goal in all of this is to really urge people to avoid the cheap PSU's or ones with shiny lights and a nice painted case and wire wrap. Spend your money on quality and you won't have to worry about damage to your components or fire hazard or even having to buy a new one in a year or two. Don't get this shitty brand:

Games & Programming / Re: iPad, latest Apple's release.
« on: Monday, February 01, 2010, 17:07:02 PM »
Dann, I only see 2 benefits (if you can call them that) for you to stick with Apple:
1. You've used it for a long time and you probably know the OS inside and out.
2. As an artist, it makes you look more professional to own a grey/white device with a half-way eaten apple on the side/front.

Other than that... there's nothing special. They're limited versions of a regular PC. Now days they use Intel and Nvidia products. You can buy a Windows-based PC and have far more upgradeability than a Mac and at a cheaper price as well. I really think Microsoft is doing well and is only going to get better. They have the Zune, Xbox and small amounts of keyboards and mice. You don't really see them trying hard to invent new products that the consumers will like even at a high price, they just build on what the consumers like now and feed the demand. Dare I say Windows Vista came at the right time to make them look bad and now Windows 7 a true masterpiece came at another good time.

Probably not as good since it's portable. I would imagine the desktop ac-powered ones are higher quality and resolution.

Game Reviews / Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta/Retail
« on: Monday, February 01, 2010, 02:20:02 AM »
I found a beta key giveaway on Slickdeals so I figured I would try the game out. I can't really say a whole lot about the game because it's hard to experience with such a low frame-rate. I have an overclocked dual-core and their minimum requirements is a 2.0GHz dualcore but even with that, it's still CPU heavy. I think it's still beta and they have some CPU work they need to figure out before release. I know it's not my graphics card, maybe it's my net. I see only 1 way to see ping to a server and that's a steady number before you join, mine was about 200ms. I don't know if a high latency gives you low frame-rate in this engine or not. Anyway, onto the half-assed review:

It's a big step up from BF2. The sound and physics are superb. The graphics are good but they could have spent more time on them. I feel like they did a tradeoff with physics > graphics. The buildings and many other objects are destructable (as my screenshots will show) and there's several explosive items laying around to help with that. I guess they've taken the airborne approach with the game because on one team you spawn from the air. Aside from that I can't say a whole lot since I got owned up the ass with 10 fps and single-player on a multiplayer server isn't that fun with 18 fps :) Oh, there's no single-player in the Beta.

Onto the screenshots:

Retail Singleplayer Review:
I just got this and started playing it. All in all, it's much better than the Beta hinted at. I think it has by far some of the best animations I've seen in a game. The guns are firmly planted in their hands (unlike MW2 @ the end) which makes it all the more believeable. I just barely started it but the beginning almost drew me away. It starts off with some secret mission back in WW2 which IMO feels like a miniaturized and militarized verison of LOST. The graphics are pretty fun, the trees are kinda lame but the effects are mind blowing and there are plenty of "woah shit" moments. Like they could have done better on a few things but everything in general comes together to make any scene excellent. Below are some screenshots:

I'll post up some more as I play the game but so far I'm really enjoying it.

Update...
Man I'm really enjoying this game. With the physics you can make your own dugout, make new paths to flank the enemys... I'm just truly enjoying this game. I have a couple more shots as well as a video that references MW2 which is kinda funny :) Enjoy:

Miscellaneous / Wordle - No real way to describe it...
« on: Sunday, January 31, 2010, 05:20:29 AM »
http://www.wordle.net

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.
