More descriptive than what I would post. All in all, I'm gonna check this out. Sounds a little LITTLE bit kinda like sorta-ish that movie Surrogates.

LOL, I was just broadcasting... mostly sarcasm :) I don't know what anybody eats, it's none of my business and frankly I don't care.

Way old, just look at her hair. Quite honestly, this isn't surprising to me. What's surprising is that they actually use real chickens. I used to be a McDonalds eater, then I discovered better fast food joints then I discovered real food. It's quite enlightening, try it sometime.

I've never even seen this thread before.  :o sorry.

It's kinda in a screwy spot huh... Well, check it out more when you get on tomorrow if you have the time. My opinion is biased but I think there's quality material in there.

Games & Programming / [How To] Excellent Ad-Blocking
« on: Thursday, March 18, 2010, 01:08:41 AM »
This is just a temporary post until I get my stuff together... Basically, you copy the contents of the hosts file into your Windows hosts file. Then, whenever you visit a website, the ads (or any site blocked by the host file) will redirect to 127.0.0.1 but unless you want a "page not found" error, we need to run a web server there. We do this with PixelServ which is a Perl program which requires ActivePerl, then we run PixelServ as a scheduled task when the user logs on and presto, clean and advertisement free webpages. But... I'm too tired right now and I needs sleep for tomorrow. Those that want to try this out, go for it but I'll have more detailed instructions later.

You Need:

Instructions:
  • Go to "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC" and edit open "hosts" in Notepad or similar text editing program.
  • Paste in content from the hosts file you downloaded.
  • Install Active Perl.
  • Download PixelServ.pl and move it to "C:\Perl" and open it in Notepad or similar text editing program.
  • In PixelServ.pl, change line
Code: [Select]
$sock = new IO::Socket::INET (  LocalHost => '0.0.0.0',to
Code: [Select]
$sock = new IO::Socket::INET (  LocalHost => '127.0.0.1',
  • Go to "C:\" and make batch file (new txt document and rename extension to .bat) with the following:
Code: [Select]
cd c:\perl
perl -w -t pixelserv.pl
Now, if all went well. You should be able to double click on the batch file (run it) and ads will disappear on websites.

If you want to automate this, you can drop the batch file into your startup folder (boring) or you can use Task Scheduler to run it automatically.
Here's some screenshots that I shot of my setup in Task Scheduler:

What site did you steal this from? It's a good review :) I am honored to have someone posting this kind of quality material on this crappy site.

Skrewup, I appreciate the walkthrough. Life would probably be easier if I had the proper tools. Right now I only have a drill, dremel and circular saw which doesn't help out too much with this :D No hacksaw or jigsaw =\ Even with the drill I seem to be imperfect, I had to re-drill the top screwholes a few times. I guess I'm just a noob :) I might make sides and I may have to end up cutting holes in the top but only after I have a spare piece to replace if I screw up lol. I'll keep your post in mind for when I decide to ruin this piece.

beta...optimizing

Those words don't go together :) Try the retail game.

what settings would make it look the best :)

The first step is running your monitor at native resolution, this usually means the highest it supports. If you run lower than native, some resolutions don't scale well and your monitor has to use like 1.5 pixels for 1 pixel which doesn't work and looks crappy like Killaman said. Some lower-than-native resolutions look ok but I know on every LCD I've seen, the highest always looks the best.

Second step to run the game at the highest settings, an example is here:

next time i play it i will tell u how much cpu and ram it uses mr nothings good enough for me  ::)

Well, really, I mean get a bit more specific. There's a wide range of computers that can play the game and simply saying that they all can do it isn't too helpful. Resolution, game quality settings, FPS in various zones are all helpful in other determining if their computer can or not. Playable can mean anything from 640x480 on the lowest settings and getting 20FPS all the way up to 7680x1600 with the highest settings including full anti-aliasing at 60FPS (monitor refresh rate, another topic). It just kinda annoys me when people say bland statements that don't really have much information. Sorry if you caught the wrong end of my stick.

i run it fine (from what i can tell)
never notice any shit fps
Again, probably because you're playing multiplayer at 1024x768 and not the highest settings. That screenshot doesn't show anything since you don't have a FPS meter. Maybe come back with some CPU usage stats?

dont know much about computers and specs and such but....
You should learn or just type it out, oh wait, you probably like showing people that price tag in there huh?

It's one thing to say "it works for me" and it's another to say "it works for me, here's my specs and here's how much it demands from my system" so perhaps others can look at that and do a bit of quick math to get a rough idea if they can run it or not.

I say that's from CPU usage which I know they've optimized since the Beta.

I'd say go for it in all honesty. I was running 27-60% CPU usage in singleplayer (keep in mind, that's a 3.37GHz quad core with Google Chrome, Trillian, X-Fire and RDC open). The 27% I saw while in-game and waiting for a wave of enemy soldiers, once they arrived it went up and peaked at 60%. I'm sure online is easier on hardware since I don't imagine there's much AI. The game is easy on RAM but graphics... it's a bit harsh but at least there's quality settings.
