Haha :) That thunderstorm was pretty wild, the lighting cast by the window and the water droplets. Just amazing. The two effects weren't in sync (the lighting didn't accurately represent the water droplets) but with something that cool and that old, who cares?

There's quite a bit of interesting facts on Wikipedia about production of the movie. If you're a fan at all, I suggest taking a peek.

Media & Art / Render Flaw in Toy Story?
« on: Friday, July 02, 2010, 03:53:27 AM »
I thought I would re-watch the series to gear up for #3. One luxury of being drawn by a computer is that as new formats become mainstream (720p, 1080p) you can be re-rendered to fit that format. Anyway, as I watched, I found what looks like z-fighting:

Towards the bottom corner of the door, a dent on the skinny part. There's a couple of spots that flash in and out during that second or two long scene. Hardly noticeable which is probably why, if it is a render flaw, Pixar ignored it.

I will stray from the original topic and say that the effects are phenomenal for being a 15 year old CGI movie. I thought I might be disappointed in at least some aspect but really, this topic is the only flaw I found. I wasn't able to spot an obvious poly (aside from textures that make a box look more 3d, like the bump maps on the door). It's a good movie.

I was roaming on Wikipedia and thought I would share this tidbit as a reply to Crunk:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi#Piggybacking
Quote
Recreational logging and mapping of other people's access points has become known as wardriving. It is also common for people to use open (unencrypted) Wi-Fi networks as a free service, termed piggybacking. Indeed, many access points are intentionally installed without security turned on so that they can be used as a free service. Providing access to one's Internet connection in this fashion may breach the Terms of Service or contract with the ISP. These activities do not result in sanctions in most jurisdictions; however, legislation and case law differ considerably across the world. A proposal to leave graffiti describing available services was called[by whom?] warchalking. A Florida court case determined that owner laziness was not to be a valid excuse.[52]

So, possibly against your ISP's TOS and may not hold up in court.

Here's my entry for today. Dedicated to Crunk. It's hard to get a picture of a rainbow with the shithole of a yard my redneck neighbors keep but I think this one is ok:

now how do they compare to my 7.2 sony sound system connect via fiber optic to the computer
all in my small 3.5  X  5 metre room :D

No idea. Comparing 7.2 to 2.0 in terms of sound quality is close to comparing apples and oranges. Using optical doesn't say much about quality, it just says you're using an external DAC which in a lot of surround systems, you have to.

I can't believe that the only thing I have to say in this thread is that I agree with Crunk.

Add another gameplay dimension with Power-Ups like NOS to boost your speed, Traffic Magnets to hinder your opponents, Juggernaut to plow through obstacles, and many more.

Don't tell me they're going to turn this into a fantasy driving game like Burnout Paradise.

So the past few days it's been really hot here and there's a side effect of that. South of where I live, the elevation drops a lot into a river valley, well the weather kind of stalls out there and builds storms easily so after a few days of being hot, the storms build up and make their way north to me. By the time they get here they can be pretty nasty. Last night it was lightning out so I checked out Weather.com to see what was coming and it didn't look like much. A few minutes later, all hell broke loose. They released 3 severe weather advisories and there was a nasty patch of storm heading right for me. As it approached everything got still then I noticed the TV antenna that's outside was sparking (there's aluminum rods at the top with coax cable running halfway down the pole that's cut, I'm guessing the antenna was concentrating the electricity in the air and sending it to ground but since the coax cable is cut, it was jumping from the coax cable to the pole creating a spark) and then the rain came. But that was it. The storm completely faded out as it approached and skirted just west of me. Never heard any thunder, only saw lightning and the rain was barely enough to wet the porch. Sometimes those weather guys can be completely wrong. I thought I would share this because of the sparking antenna, I've never seen anything like it before.
