Hardware/Software / Re: AMD ditching the "ATI" brand
« on: Monday, September 20, 2010, 14:14:00 PM »
You can't just go and make your own processor. Intel and AMD are where they are because they have YEARS of experience. When has Apple ever made a processor? I remember it always being PowerPC or Motorolla or something. If they're truly making their own, they will suffer. If they're using someone else's (VIA maybe?) they'll still suffer. Using anything other than Intel or AMD in computers is really not a good idea.

Wow. To be honest, I expected your ass to come back as it left. It's good to see you're still about, better you get the Purple Heart than someone else getting a folded flag at your funeral. How was it that you found a 300lb IED?

I know what you mean, I'm at 256kbps upload and I usually don't bother with anything past 200mb. 25mbps would be great for upload, I couldn't imagine anything faster than that though really.

Good idea Delta. I just did and got some interesting results. With GPU acceleration, it crashed frequently (I guess that's why it's still beta :P) but when it did work, I noticed GPU usage up to 15% and CPU spikes around 55% total usage. I disabled the switch and noticed no more than 5% GPU usage and a CPU spike upwards of 80%+. It obviously does something. I'll keep it enabled for now and be optimistic for future updates :)

What does anyone legally do with that speed? I can kinda understand the upload speed, that would be nice but the download?? That's overkill for HD YouTube streaming. I believe that's even overkill for 1080p streaming, unless it's RAW. If you're being illegal, that's a great speed but then you gotta wonder about using that 24/7 and being watched. Unless you're using those speeds all the time, and I don't see how you could legally, it's a waste of money IMO. I would go for one tenth of that speed if it meant incredible ping and jitter.

I dunno. I think mostly at this point the GPU acceleration is done to image handling and basic things since it's not fully implemented, I believe it says what's what in the article.

I can just send you the font from my computer? It comes off with OSX/Photoshop, and it is distributable as far as I know.

That'd be worth a try. I dunno if fonts work cross-platform but it's about time I found out.

this font on this businesswoman would bring in business for spanky so he has to pay for it

Or just use another condensed font that won't look any different.

I've had a tab open sitting at Please Wait, Loading for probably a half hour. What's the point?

No, I don't know of any browser based games that aren't Flash and Flash has been GPU accelerated for a while now.

I don't know if I see any difference but it might have been enabled already since that article is a little old and I use a newer build.

^^ THIS. I know I said black only but... this is what I wanted but cannot accomplish myself. Some font will obviously need to be larger but that's a simple tweak for a great design.

*EDIT*
Damn it Vikraal :) I didn't think you'd be so active here as to beat me to a reply to my own thread!

*EDIT EDIT*
Damn your Apple products Dann! The font isn't installed on Windows and a few websites I looked at want to charge for it =\

My ISP got a grant from this:
http://www.recovery.gov/Pages/home.aspx

The 1.5 miles I describe is line-of-sight distance from my house to the tower my antenna points to. I assume the cable follows roads and it may be longer. When I first moved here, we had a Verizon guy come out and install a phone for us and he said the lines are so bad that we would be looking at 26k dial-up. There also wasn't any caller-id or many special features available for us here (even though those a-holes charged for it anyway...). I think it has to do more with the line than the distance although it looks like, by road, it's about 1.8 miles to the Verizon brick building. My neighbor is on dial-up with those same lines and they're always complaining about disconnects and issues (they had me try to swap out their dial-up modem several times).

fiber optics where its at

Depends on how it's used and if it's in your area. Some fiber lines are shared among a street or neighborhood.
