General Chat / Re: Poll (Modifying existing maps)
« on: Sunday, June 17, 2012, 16:04:18 PM »
I would be highly against removing official maps. I've removed some mAAps before but only stupid ones that were unfinished or highly unrealistic. Download size is an issue but I don't think we should worry about it as much. The game is only what, 800MB total to download? AA files compress amazingly well and adding/removing 1 single map doesn't change a whole lot, you might be looking at 1-3MB.

UA should be updated. The glitches where you can get ontop of bravo central and western objective. Need some player blocking volumes there.

In terms of changing the gameplay of original maps? what does that REALLY mean?

I'm not sure if those are fixed on the mAAp Dropbox one. I mostly fixed some issues where you could get on some edging that you shouldn't be able to. I think I also fixed a lighting issue.

I hate to burst the bubble here but you need to treat each change differently. This seems like a poll for "update AA. yes? no?". Not just a poll for a specific feature. It needs to be per-feature, because some people will like some features and others won't.

To add onto this, there needs to be a discussion on whether or not it's ok to modify gameplay of existing maps. It's already established that fixing bugs is fine in regular maps but modifying core gameplay is another discussion all together.

The only thing left to say is get a poll going for some basic improvement ideas. I'll move it to the news forum and it will go out on Twitter and Facebook for people to come in and vote.

Thanks for your comments on the Conquest objectives.

I think the biggest flaw in your argument, one that we both share, is the definition of "better". That will vary extremely from person to person. Also, I think you view most of the members here as non-players. While that's true for me and a few others who don't play very much, the vast majority of people here do play on a regular basis. Possessed being just one of them.

I really think you have a lot of motivation. Have a look in the mAAp forum to see our previous idea discussions and how the community responded. I think you should start 2-3 small polls for gameplay/feature updates and see how people respond. We need to know what the community would like in order to have some form of direction before we have any chance of improving things.

I agree. We don't have the time, resources or knowledge to overhaul the game. Even if we could, it's an outdated engine that has severe limitations compared to today's expectations from gamers.

im sorry but this is where i stopped reading. boring? seriously? this game has been out for how many years? if this game was boring, no one would still be playing it.

I agree with him that it's boring. The gameplay is stale and so are the players. Same boring map for 50 rounds in a row, you know exactly where the enemy is coming from, they know where you are. Nobody plays as a team and there's shitty tactics.

I've seen other posts where people just hate the gameplay and get tired of AA, especially when comparing it to other games. It's not just me, it's why there's only 150 or so people on at any given time. It's a game for the minorities, the whores, the kids, the glitchers. There would be more people playing if the game had better features and a better player base.

mAAp Project / Re: Simple Questions in the Editor

The important thing is that you're spotting it and you know what to look out for. Also that you're fixing it :)

ekcomm, it would be advisable to redo that brush. It looks to me like you vertex edited it and snap to grid wasn't enabled. I just want to take this opportunity to say that the whole BSP alignment thing isn't about aligning to the larger bold line on the grid, it's about aligning BSP to each other and making sure everything is squared up. It doesn't matter what grid line you align to, it just matters that all the BSP in the editor is at right angles and flush with other BSP. Obviously cylinders break this rule but they too can cause issues.

Anyway, if you want a super simple keypad controlled mover, take a look at the garage door on Pipeline. I believe it has something to do with the Object property on the Mover, something about bInitialState.

^^UnDiSpUtEd^^ you have a fantastic attitude. Jonny wouldn't have left if all players thought like you did. Unfortunately, you're in a very small minority (but I'm with you).

The game could use a graphics update along with sound, HUD, code and more. The problem is, we've tried things in the past. Take a look in the mAAp forum, there's a few discussions and polls where players RAGED about something as simple as player uniforms being upgraded to digital camo. I even suggested importing AA3 sounds and that was an amazing discussion. We're bound by so much that we can't do anything that the community wouldn't want, otherwise we're killing the game.

Your best bet is to come up with small, simple ideas yourself and start a poll. See if it's possible and worthwhile for us to do it and see if the community would want it. If both are yes, we'll go after it.

Aside from that, mAAp severely needs an update, it's been needing one since February. It's going to take time because there's only 1 person in control of Assist and he's not sitting around on his ass waiting for us to finish work, he's got a life and a busy one at that.

In the team description you should put something like "If you beat us you'll be permanently banned from Assist." haha

This idea tops Spanky's Balls.
