General Chat / Re: Why The New Update for 2.5 Assist?
« on: Sunday, July 07, 2013, 00:33:32 AM »
Thanks for the post Rapture.

1: Bridge Construction
OBJ is broken
Can't climb Def Ladder Onto Tower
Add really small amounts of fog (just itty bitty)
That should all be easy to fix. I'll add this to a personal list and see that it gets fixed in the next update.

2:Breakout
Why are my nades when I throw them from 2nd floor of spawn on def, to 1st floor hallway towards assault spawn or down in main pump hurting my teammates that are postioned on the 3rd floor?
I have no answer for this. I would have to see it in-game before even guessing as to why it happens.

Can We Add A Self heal??
Can we add A sai? enemy spotted but not the glitched version where u can report e's
even though u cannot actually see them.
Highly unlikely. This would require heavy amounts of coding via UScript and that's pretty much a lost language. A few people still know it but nobody that's willing to work on AA. Jonny, Possessed and me know enough to putter around and compile basic stuff but creating a new mod from scratch is way outside our skillset.

Can we add a editor made for 2.5 and not have to make maps in 2.8 and convert them to 2.5? (if not then this is ok, just a suggestion)
No, for many reasons. The editor could allow hacks to be made easier. It's one that's not public and has files that might be bad if leaked. It is also very buggy and temperamental and would be a strain to explain everything with it to the public. Then we would have to think about what to do when people make maps, how to handle them and allow people to upload them. Would the maps even make the cut? If there were more players and more interest in custom maps, I would probably be motivated to create our own Mission Depot website where everything would be handled. Right now though, I don't see it adding any benefit to the community as most of them don't even play custom maps aside from Pool Day.

Can we fix ladder glitch where u get stuck on ladders and can't do anything?
This goes back to the UScript thing again. Is it a bug? Is it AGP code? Is it engine code? It's probably beyond our knowledge.

PB!!!! true pb is great. but if the admin pb commands don't work (and hack hunter works better than pb and faster) can we get rid of pb and have hack hunter as our main source for catching hackers so that people aren't getting handshake fails and other pb errors. besides, what's the stats on pb caught hackers and hack hunter caught hackers? what in ur opinon works best?
I agree. PB just adds lag and is very bloated with all of the checks. I don't like it but I'm sure Jonny and Possessed would disagree.

Also what is progress on updating to other versions other than 2.5? Not necessarily 2.8.5, but are there other versions we could build up to? 2.6? 2.7?
2.8.5 is pretty much lost unless ELiZ comes back and fixes the brick wall of issues that he ran into. 2.5 is used due to the native code. Jonny got 2.8.5 working on Linux and Mac so 2.6 would be possible as UScript mods were developed for that but I don't know that it would be worthwhile.

we miss those updates (patches) and we understand all the work is done free of charge without using Pragmatic (Pay for honor) But more people will be excited with more frequent updates.
Again, I agree. I love updates. It shows the developers care. There's not a lot to update though. Security is tough because good hacks are paid for and personally, I wouldn't know the first step to detecting one. Updates for the game itself is pretty much impossible since we don't have the source code. Maps are great and that's something I know how to do pretty well but not many people play them. That's why I'm thinking about bug fixes and tuning existing maps without changing gameplay.

Wrong. AA2 needs to remain AA2. If you want to evolve go play another game.
As Spank said, we need to build a strong core base of AA2 fans, that's why it
needs to return to be what it was originally when it was hugely popular.

I agree with this except when it comes to maps and glitch fixes. I would love to remove Bridge and all the other old whore maps but I know the majority of players wouldn't like that plus, my desire to keep the game original outweighs my dislike for old maps :)

I think the game should be developed further. We should do everything we can to advance it as long as it means keeping gameplay and core values original. I think the next step is to remove silly maps like Teh Yetis Lair, PBall, PoolDay and I think there's a couple others. Keep the custom maps that have a realistic feel.

hi to all
now we should just make a step back and watch what will happened. the admins and programmer of this game can do what they want. and I guess, maybe, this can go in a good direction. first of all I did not think that it will, but maybe it is a good way.
let's try it. enjoy and relax. give it a chance. for sure, none of us would like to see this game dead (maybe almost all).
so maybe in the future, when the players are growing (what a nice expression :)) then they will maybe accept the modded servers like they do already, but maybe with half honor counting and not with nothing.
but until then, just go and fight and kill all the cheating noobs.
and enjoy the game!

A big thanks to Merlin for disagreeing with the decision but understanding and accepting it. His level of maturity and gratitude is what all AA players should strive to have.

Also, if discouraging mods turns out to be a horrible decision and the vast majority of players leave rapidly, I'm sure Jonny will do something to remedy that. Bottom line is, you need players to keep a game alive.

Ak4fire, I know all about the player stats because I built the statistics code on this website as well as a graph that marks players. When Assist first came out, there were about as many players as there are now and it grew to hit past 200-250 online at any given time. All the mods weren't available at that time but then people started messing around and installing mods, making tutorials and it became widespread. Numbers have since decreased. I'm sure numbers will still decrease because, again, the people that are around now largely enjoy mods. Now, if those people that got tired of the mods come back and realize they're not an issue anymore, I believe they will be part of a stronger player base.

I could be wrong though... I can't read peoples minds.

Perhaps a better pick-a-weap mod would be a more elegant answer. Having different modes such as rifle, machine gun or explosives to stop people from using a rpg when everybody else is having a pistol match. Then maybe allow 1 or 2 people per team to have an AR or something like that.

The problem with that is that none of us really know how to use UScript very effectively. Disabling tracking is by far more easier, faster and fair across the board than trying to redesign current mods.

I'm glad you'll stick around. I just always find it amazing that nobody seems to have heard of this site despite this being the official website that's been running for a year and a half. Most new users just come here to bitch when they think someone is hacking or when something gets changed in Assist or god forbid, when there's down time.

He's not the only one that gets past the bans, he's just the most talked about example. If you know how to code in RealBasic and want to create a better ban method/system, send Jonny a PM with your ideas.

I've tried to come up with some ideas and methods but Jonny's a bit smarter/more creative and explained to me why they wouldn't work so I'm tapped out as far as that goes.

Course, Jonny could always implement his Paypal donation-based account system. You thought disabling mods caused a shit storm, that would make people rage 10x as much.

That's perfectly fine. I enjoy mods too. I like fucking around in low gravity or RPG fest or whatever but there's a time and place.

That's the whole reason why mods are discouraged but still allowed. Jonny could add code to Assist that deletes the entire AA installation when you install a mod but instead he decided to just disable tracking. I think that's a very fair compromise.

I have no control over Assist or anything that's done with it. I don't really play AA either. I'm just posting in this because I agree with what Jonny is doing.

The whole "play on a non-mod server" argument is invalid. We have LOST old AA players because the gameplay they (and we) loved is destroyed with mods. All that hang around now is people that like the mods. If we allow hacks and build them into Assist people will play with them and we will lose the base of players that don't like them. Then what do you say to those people that are left that like the hacks when you decide to remove them? It's the same thing here.

Because mods severely alter the original gameplay that America's Army is known for. Same reason why you could report a server to Pragmatic to get it disabled. The game was built for realism and balanced gameplay. Mods throw that out the window. It's not about doing things because people whine, it's about taking the project in a direction that restores the classic AA that we all loved.

They just put the final nail in the coffin for AA 2.5....Good job admins....

Thanks. When you make your own project to share with other people, feel free to go against the wishes of the few when it means you are going down the path that you feel is right.

Yet another person registering here just to bitch and complain. Don't bother to be helpful, participate in discussions or type a simple thank you for the hundreds of hours Jonny and others have put into this FREE project so you can play.

Quoted from another thread:
You can do whatever you want, including uninstalling Assist.

You're not paying for Assist, there is no contract and thus no right that you have to demand any features. You have no obligation to use it either. Assist was developed and is maintained by people for free and they can do what they want with it.

I think you're forgetting about what it used to be like when Pragmatic was running honor for Americas Army. There was an additional cost and it was easy to report servers for abuse and get servers shutdown or de-authorized. There is no cost now. The only thing Jonny asks is that you don't use mods that unbalance the game or destroy core gameplay. You're welcome to use those mods still but the honor will be disabled through HIS program. Right now, you're getting less harsh rules/consequences and not paying a dime compared to Pragmatic's system.

tidididi is right. This game built it's popularity without mods. It's a unique gameplay experience and mods turn it into just another game.
