Can't you change the overall sound profile in windows to headphone instead of speaker? Did you try the control panel options for the audio? There might be an option there that'll make it louder changing the actual volume.
That's... not right. It wouldn't do that. Maybe it's something to do with how Dell made the hardware but I'd be surprised if there's a difference. It's just a regular output. You should be able to get them plenty loud through the back output, loud enough to hurt.

They are always tricky. Best just to avoid them if possible that way you avoid wasting your time, dealing with crappy wire and possible grounding issues that introduce noise.The only problem is that when I plug my headphones into the back of the computer, it reads them as speakers. It does not go as loud and just sounds overall worse than when I plugged them into the front panel. I don't know, it might just be the driver I'm using.
