Feedback & Suggestions / Re: [Poll] Banning Policy...
« on: Monday, November 11, 2013, 20:43:14 PM »
I'm not saying "Uninstall" --I am simply saying "There are other things you take usage of every day that do as much as Assist does in terms of collecting data. Why is then Assist deserving of so much moaning?"

If this does not resolve the problem as you've put it then why don't we all try to get to a solution then? I'm all ears. That's why I comment/participate in the community/forum. If I didn't care, I'd simply ignore it and resume my posting activity to either new updates and/or the private area of the forum.

Instead of placing me or any other Admin for that matter --as the target to shoot down; why not accept that we're all here to attempt at making this game better for everyone and create a nice little happy community? That is all there is to it. I'm sorry if it seemed any other way, really.

3 What about if the forum names is connected to assist. I mean it could be the same BT name to forum name, connected, i think this way you would also know the needed information to deal with the current issues on how to track multiple users. Just an idea but of course I know it is hard in this situation.
We've been looking at this but it seems as though we'd need consent from BT --as well as some sort of system that would allow information to be exchanged between the two platforms which is likely a huge step against security.

Quote
'Sorry' - didn't know, that further explanations are necessary...
If people want to be understood correctly it usually is in their best interest to..well, explain things further. It is not necessary. Just needed when trying to keep an argument within a certain level of understanding and maturity.

Quote
'need to want' ..? What is this? Anarchist theory..? Look around you, everything is based on the rules. This is a basic feature of society based on law. If you can't understand that, then I can't help you - nobody can...
As for tolerance, in quote above you've said, that you're already zero-tolerance nazi-oriented - so, these two opinions are contradictory...
I am rather confused by this quote. I fail to understand the analogy between 'need to want' and Anarchy. I also seem to fail to understand how everything is based on rules, especially those enticed within the law. If anything, law itself is based on the premisses of an economical biological system --be it of any kind. And...since you seem to have taken my text out of context in regards to the implementation of rules, I'll attempt at making it simpler to understand:

"I am of the opinion implementing such rigid rules (the ones mentioned earlier on this thread) will, quite on the contrary (that is, rather than help the community behave and make us look like we're chilled), make us out to be some sort of zero-tolerance nazi-oriented Administrators/Mods (which is to say we aren't at that point currently but would enforce that idea and thus become closer to being the aforementioned if we were to include those mentioned strict rules). The members of this forum needn't rules to behave like adults.(...err, just like a scientist does not need society to tell him he must have interest in science --action is triggered by one's own interest and not through enforcement and/or censorship) They simply need to want to behave like adults.(Simple, eh? If you want to behave like an adult, you will most likely behave like an adult. But you need to want to be arsed about it.)

P.S:. We do take interest on what the community has to say so long as what the community is saying is within the same level of interest and depth that we look forward to whenever change is due to occur.

1. Agree, but don't try to force people - remember, free will...
Free will is just another way of enforcement. A middle ground between the two is ideal: Install a poll system and make it noticeable but allow players to ignore it. This will force them to know and be aware of the ongoings of Assist and AAO but not force them to take initiative and/or be involved with it at all.

Quote
4. Maybe public works..? ( :D ) Seriously: I don't think this forum is able to accept something like this - here is zero tolerance...
If you take the time to look back you'll find that we've grown considerably from a zero-tolerance policy. If you bring valid arguments and construct your posts to represent fully in accordance with your thoughts, we'll always be considerate of what's presented in it and take it up to discussion.

Quote
7. More stricter forum rules (no swearing, respect etc.).

To help abide by the rules, should be implemented something like 'Warnings':
- second offense = expulsion for a specified time.
- third offense = ban forever.

I am of the opinion implementing such rigid rules will, quite on the contrary, make us out to be some sort of zero-tolerance nazi-oriented Administrators/Mods. The members of this forum needn't rules to behave like adults. They simply need to want to behave like adults.

I propose we try a different angle on this topic. It has been made evident that people have several takes on what it may constitute to hack in this game and what type of consequences those who've performed such an act should undergo. However, instead of letting the focus remain on the construction/deconstruction and justification of each other's opinions, I'd like to suggest that we go back a few notches and take a simpler approach.

In a summarised and objective way, come up with a list of Pros and Cons for the following scenarios:

1. Player Hacks and is given a Second Change.
2. Player Hacks and is given a Punishment (i.e:. Hacker Tag, Pay a certain amount of money, etc)
3. Player Hacks and is permanently banned.

Refer to the following when listing the pros and cons:
- Consequences for the individual.
- Consequences for the community.
- What is gained by whichever option.
- What is lost by whichever option.
- Status-quo aggravation in whichever option.

Meanwhile, to clear some other things that have been mentioned up before:

NoBigDeal: Your post has not been deleted. SMF keeps track of all and any moderation activity. Trashed/deleted posts are also archived into a specific board. I have looked around and none of your posts has been --even at the slightest-- touched. If anything, it could so be that case that one of your posts was not approved (for restricted boards). Since the revamp of the forum, I went through the trouble of looking through all of the unapproved replies and approved them all. Your theory is not met with factual proof.

Assist's TOA...is not in any way illegal. The only clause to the legality of our TOA is that we retain permission to view & use the collected data for anti-cheat purposes. If the integral legality of our TOA was to be reviewed by respective Law Entities, we'd be obligated to disclose the ability to use the collected data in any way or form and would be forced to archive it with some sort of high-level encryption for safety reasons. However...before I speak any further on this matter, let us please situate ourselves in today's 'privacy' situation spanning out and about:

- Google collects data from you.
- Facebook collects data from you.
- Apple collects data from you.
- Windows collects data from you.
- Credit/Debit Cards collect data from you.
- Telecommunications Operators collect data from you.
- Your ISP collects data from you.

Need I say more? Some of the above aren't even a case of "I Agree" or "I Disagree" --some of them are simply forced unto you. If we're to bitch about a honest, clear and up-front TOA such as the one Assist has then I'll have to find myself nicely ask that you first shut down your internet, stop using your debit/credit cards, cut access to your phone and only then...will the slightest attempt at bitching gain that tenth more of sense.

1.Insert polls into assist and make sure players can vote even using BT account.

2.Make sure the final decisions are made with the full ''Majority'' of voters.

3.Delete and remove multiple accounts on the forum. (including permanent banned accounts.)

4.Charge a fee of cash for cheaters/hackers or other kind of distribution action players for their second chance, this way you would get wanted donations.

5.Watch list them, keep eye on them so they don't brake any kind of rule of advantage.

6.People do make mistakes and I think they should be punished. But they should be forgiven and given the opportunity for a second chance. We are human beings.

Point 1 & 2 are being addressed in the upcoming release/update of Assist - AST8. This release will be major in many ways and it will include several changes to the current version. New maps will be added, a new skin will be implemented and several other features such as headlines, news, polls as well as further added functionality will be included.

Point 3 is slightly harder to deal with. Multiple accounts are hard to trace with SMF. If there were an option to simply look for accounts sharing the same IP, it'd make keeping the userbase clean a lot easier. I will be looking at this, though.

Point 4, 5 & 6 are, as much as relativeness of the subject allows, heavily permit on one's own opinion and perspective on the matter of hacking and the consequences therein implicit. It is a tedious concept to grasp in terms of actual viable consequences to the community and to our current userbase as it is distinctively dubious if a humanitarian perspective is to be taken. I enjoy that people are willing to give this subject a chance for debate though I am faced with the need to emphasise that such discussion must take a greater level of depth and mature vision from its participants or else it will remain just a battle of self-generated opinions.

I have absolutely no clue why its changed since all that I touched was the forum board layout and its board/user permissions. Unless the ServersList was feeding off of a particular post within the forum?! If this is that case than I'll probably have to update the thread-ID for the SSI-push.

News / Site's Back Up & Updates
« on: Friday, November 08, 2013, 03:23:15 AM »
First and foremost, we would like to apologise for the site's downtime.

We have not yet been familiarised with the specific and most logical reason as to why the website was down for so long but we do highly suspect it was due to some unexpected involvement of sheep and cows. Further details have not been disclosed either. Face-palm is the most convenient action to follow.

However, we did take the opportunity to change a few things, the most noticeable being the forum board layout. The old forum layout was too disorganised and chaotic to our my taste so I went ahead and changed it. As of today, the board layout is as follow:

Assist (Public Board)
- News (What goes here: Updates, Community Polls, General News & Staff Promotions/Demotions)
- Support (What goes here: General Support for Assist, Server Support and Honour Claims)
      ---- Honour Claim
      ---- Assist Support
      ---- Server Support

- Feedback & Suggestions (What goes here: Bug Reports, User feedback, Server feedback, Forum feedback, etc.)
      ---- Bug Report

America's Army (Public Board)
- General Chat (What goes here: Anything related to America's Army)
- Clans, Matches & Scrims (What goes here: Clan Info & Match/Scrim planning)
     ---- Clan Information
     ---- Clan Recruitment
     ---- Matches & Scrims

- Anti-Cheat
     ---- Hall of Shame
     ---- Background Checks
     ---- Ban Appeals

- mAAp Project (What goes here: All subjects pertaining to the mAAp Project)
     ---- Map Ideas

Community (Public Board)
- The Lounge (What goes here: General Discussion)
      ---- Introduce Yourself
      ---- Media & Art
      ---- Hardware/Software
      ---- Miscellaneous

- Games & Programming (What goes here: Game Chat, Game Reviews, Programming & Code)
      ---- Game Reviews

Next to each board there is a brief explanation of what goes where to better aid you understanding the new layout/organisation of the forum. Please bare in mind that although most of the topics have been moved to their proper places there's still a lot of micro-management and moderation to be done. Give it a few days and all will be in its right place.

P.S:. If you'd like to express opinions on the new layout, give general feedback or perhaps even accuse us of trillion levels of stupidity for caring so much about your experience and AAO, please do so in our newly born board "Feedback & Suggestions".

Best,
/Dan

I wouldn't say, their ping has an influence on mine, but I believe that someone with a high ping can be harder to kill, due to teleportation, you can't really see where he is, and sometimes he runs faster, but that's it. Admins shouldn't kick for that, it's silly.

AA has been teleportation-free since around version 2.3 I believe? Not entirely sure. If teleportation happens then it is due to the ping of the server itself and not its players. This is an issue to be resolved with the hosting as you're either not being given the server power/specs that you signed and paid for or you're essentially overloading the server. Either one way or the other, it is a subject none related to players and their pings.

Quote
1) EU playing on NA server or whatever. Ping is high, you shoot 0.05 seconds faster.
False. There is no such thing as shooting faster. The only thing that ping causes is detriment in information-exchange.

Quote
To stay on topic: this is not true. They are a bunch of abusive kids. They admit to ghost every round. Last time i played WC, i asked to put them on 1 team cauz it was getting boring with the ghosting, and their answer was like ' some players don't know the map'. Seriously ... cool admins? uh

This is not staying on topic...when the topic concerns ATAS server kicking for high ping values which is what the whole argument has been about.

I'm not picking on you. Simply trying to get the most assertive and accurate information out in the public so it becomes crystal clear what effects ping may have and where these are either player-related or server-related.

Or maybe even, a slightly more detailed explanation.

I need something more concrete so that I may help you out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping_(video_gaming)

Quote
Older Games:
In some games, users with a high ping unintentionally gain an unfair advantage, as in some implementations of the Quake III Arena network protocol and game engine. In these games, the player aided by the higher ping skips around, almost looking like they are teleporting, making it hard to judge where the character is exactly, and thus more elusive to target. For this reason, many servers automatically remove players with higher than average ping - with thresholds as low as 130 milliseconds.

Newer Games:
In more modern multiplayer online video games implementations, the server keeps track of where the user's avatar (character) is, so having a high latency will usually be to the user's peril. It generally means that having a high ping is detrimental ONLY/MOSTLY to the "lagger" having seeing rival players locations at a "delayed rate". With the latest in net code implementations in modern games. A player's "location" is now handled by the "server" so as to reduce if not eliminate the "teleporting" effect of high ping or more commonly - packet-loss.

...America's Army 2.5 being the latter (insofar understood as 'Newer Games'). It needs to be understood that server ping is not directly affected by player ping. Often times, the most common issue seems to be there exists a disparity between the number of players a server can host and the number of players the server has been set-up to host; whereas the former relates to one's server hosting and the latter relates to the server set-up settings.

It is an absurdity that servers kick en-vise of high pings; Even more when faced with a vigorous fact that ours is a small community that should be catering to new users as opposed to remaining this ego-turned power-childish playground slutty shenanigan.

I'm personally putting all the effort I can towards having Assist host an official server made to the community and ran by it.

I suppose having Assault spawn at several locations (separate squads) would add an interesting twist to the map. However,  considering defence spawns in the building, it may make it nearly impossible for the small squads to reach the building as they'll be able to assume fire-positions before the Assault team even reaches the objective.

I'm inclined to go with the default Demolition set-up (Assault teams spread out across the map).
