Samsung 840 EVO if you want a good SSD on the cheap. Insane speeds and their software makes em go even faster.

A SSD is pointless if you don't put Windows and all your programs on it. As far as files though, if they're JPG pictures or MP3's, they won't notice a difference. Larger files used for projects should be on the SSD though.

To install Windows, disconnect your bad drive (you don't want it running any longer than it has to be, shut it down ASAP). Hook up the good drive, install Windows as normal and then when that's done, hook up your old drive and try to pull data over.

Dead can be a lot of things. Bad sectors, head misalignment, fried logic board, broken traces, broken wires, faulty chips.

It's amazing that they even work at all :)

You gotta see if you can get it to respond. Hook it up and see what you get. Might be lucky and find that it's just a corrupted Windows install due to bad sectors.

If it does absolutely nothing and won't show up in the Device Manager then throw it in the freezer for over an hour (even overnight) and then make a mad dash to plug it in and recover data. That's only a last resort as the condensation could fry something permanent.

I have fixed both the Getting Started page and the YouTube video by adding an annotation.

That's odd that it would stop at port test error. If it was an Assist issue, it would stop while trying to communicate. Weird.

ok I found the screen that spanky showed and it was on IDE. I changed to AHCI and restarted.  Unfortunately I still get to the "Reboot and select proper boot device..." error but a few seconds later i get another message underneath saying "A disk read error occurred Press crtl+alt+del to restart"

disk dead, believe it or not :D

now we just need to remove the half points for forceclass servers

I should remind you that the goal of Assist isn't to allow users to rack up a larger number on a 3rd party website. The goal is to keep America's Army 2 alive. The fact that forceclassing is allowed at all is something you should be thankful for (if you enjoy that kind of thing). It was never officially allowed.

I know about that problem in switching the controller settings. I do that a lot actually. All you have to do is change a registry entry (IAStor or something...) then restart and change the controller setting.

My concern lies in Jason saying he got this:

That is NEVER caused by switching from AHCI to IDE or vice-versa. That is caused though, by a dying hard drive, bad SATA cable or even a faulty motherboard. If the hard drive is dying, the first thing that should be done is to boot a live OS, plug in the hard drive and make a mad dash for copying files off, if that's even possible at this point. Once that's done, troubleshooting can continue and if it's not the drive, oh well. But if it is, and it completely dies while trying to troubleshoot, some important stuff could be gone.

That's not the page where you would change it, have a look here:

With that said, I don't think your problem is switching from RAID to AHCI. What happens in that case is either a BSOD or just a plain restart while trying to start Windows. It really sounds like a hard drive failure or if you're lucky, a crappy SATA cable.

Thanks Teddy. Normally I try to keep it under wraps but Microsoft seem to have fooled me.
