Let me give it to you this way, US Tax payer money paid for this so it does not belong to the army or Epic.

17 USC § 105 - Subject matter of copyright: United States Government works
Copyright protection under this title is not available for any work of the United States Government, but the United States Government is not precluded from receiving and holding copyrights transferred to it by assignment, bequest, or otherwise.

Epic screwed itself when entering the deal with the government/military. It's the law not their choice.

I have no legal background and would love to see AA2 source made available.  That said here is another argument pulled from that same thread:
17 USC § 105 applies to Government works but probably not to Military and Military subcontracts.

The way I see it, they aren't going to just give away the source code.  If someone wants it they would have to spend the time/money and go through lawyers to attempt to get it released.

You ust stated it belongs to the Army, it can't it was payed for using tax payer money so it belongs to the people so it has to be made open to the public that is why it is a free game. SO if you want to attempt to acquire the source code send me a message and we will make a run at it.

That topic was recently explored and there is just about no chance of getting the source code.

An important excerpt from the thread:

Lawgiver]I'm uncomfortable with all this talk about forking...

But seriously, we appreciate your interests but the AA source won't be released as open source because of our agreements with Epic Games. They own the intellectual property to their game engine and we just license it.

AA2 is created using the base Unreal Engine 2 but the source code is intermingled and there is no viable way to separate the two.

I know this is not the answer you were looking for but Hopefully some good news is the new release of AA Proving Grounds provides modes of play where we bring back some of the old game characteristics and favorite maps. Come give it a try and check out a Hard Core map. You can download it free on Steam at

General Chat / AAPG Master Servers
« on: Monday, September 09, 2013, 15:57:41 PM »
I know this isn't an AAPG community.  But I also know a lot of smart people hang around here.  My goal is to get a list of registered servers from steam. Does anyone know how to find the connection information (ip address, port, and registered game name) for the AAPG Steam Master Servers?

I've attempted to use wire shark while the aa loader populates the server table but I can't seem to narrow that down to a specific call to the master server.  Looking through the various UDP requests/responses it would seem that AAPG is using a source master server because I see a lot of "Source Engine Query" in the response packets.  I am able to query specific servers for information, this is specifically about getting a list of servers.

Proton and other competitive guys can you PM me.I could get contact with some of the devs and they said we could make a letter to them about what we want to see in new AA version(mainly on competitive side)

Ty

I was working on a similar thing, feel free to message me.  I think the competitive community should develop a specification for what we think makes a good competitive game broken down into: sound, visuals, map design, shooting, weapons, server settings, tournament support, movement, configurables, mission objective design, balance, etc.  What the DEVs do with it is out of our control, but they are repeatedly asking for input from the competitive community and I think a formal specification for what we want would be the best format.  I am a software engineer so I do have some experience writing technical specifications.
