Hi all,
Back on AAO! What memories.
I do my renewal in this beautiful game, which gave me sleepless nights.

I just downloaded version 2.8.3 to start mapping. Is it still relevant the new maps created by the community?

You're welcome, there's no prejudice at all. The current version of the game you have to use to play with the Assist is the 2.5 one, therefore if you make any map with the 2.8.5 editor keep in mind it shall be ported/converted (or done once again). While the 2.8.5 editor is public and readily available, the 2.5 version isn't public. Still, you might consider converting by using Eliz's AARE tool.
