Bringing back 2.8.5
« on: Tuesday, March 20, 2012, 01:00:09 AM »
So I was wondering if there was actually a way to also bring back 2.8.5 using the same method as what was done here

Sure. All you gotta do is learn a cross-platform code that allows you to build a GUI and manage files. Then build a backend server and pay to have it hosted in a data center. After that, it's easy.

Oh, and you'll need to learn UScript or LUA/C++.

I wouldn't change back to 2.8.5 even if it was possible. It took some time to get used to little differences between these two versions, but 2.5 feels home again. Guys have done a great job with Assist so why dreaming of 2.8.5? Even if it was possible, it would divide the growing community again and that wouldn't do any good for anyone. Better have one working cross-platform so we can have more players and better community.

it took me some time to get used to some differences. Smal HUD. No radar (not that bad but why the hell is there a shout enemy spotted o.O) But since I'm used to it, love aa 2.5 as much as i loved 2.8.5. Just miss some players :(

I would be happy if someone did it, relieve me of the burden of running this system.

This is the conversation ender.

Impossible, unless you get the entire sources from the devs and hire someone to port the game, even then it would be buggy just like 2.5's ports are.

Another thing to think about, while we can have custom maps in 2.8, we can't import anything. 2.5 has the potential for all-new content in maps. We can import textures, models and anything else into the game.

*EDIT*
I would be happy if someone did it, relieve me of the burden of running this system.
No it wouldn't, it would just mean that people would play 2.8.5. There would still be die-hard 2.5 players that you've converted due to your awesome system. Also, what's the burden of it running now? I'm sure the donations you have now more than cover the datacenter cost. You haven't updated in a while so the system is just running. It shouldn't be a burden now...

I for one love the gameplay and play style of 2.5, quicker movements.

I dont miss co-op or the slower reacting movements and i dont miss the radar either. (compass ftw)

all i 'kinda' miss about 2.8.5 is flashes were basically jokes when used out-doors.... which was nice :)

thats it. only thing 2.8.5 had over 2.5.

so thanks for bringing 2.5 back alive! i agree, we should have one 2.x version of aao, the less this game is divided the more players we will have.

i agree with the very practical reasons of running 2.5 over any other version, i only disagree on Coop gameplay, it might just haven't been your cup of tea but i assure you all it was fun to play with friends. Working as a team to get to the objective, playing (fair) for the team and not as an individual, having a well defined role inside a squad...i believe this is what was meant to be America's Army core gameplay meaning.

Lets stick with this 2.5:)
Many players play with mac platforms and now as i see many play it on windows, i dont wanna see MAC and linux users playing again and couple windows, as it said well done to community and jonny, spanky and others who realy did great job spending their money from their pockets and we play for free. We have to stick with 2.5 it's our homeland and it's way better than 2.8 or 3.0 ... devs, just rushed fast creating versions after versions and they didnt think of people starting to dislike it. Im sure if we keep with 2.5 it will be much better for people.
