General Chat / Re: Merry Christmas
« on: Thursday, December 22, 2016, 20:19:20 PM »
Well, I haven't been here in a while, just trolling "on the line" while the missus cooks up some pies for Xmas, so I thought I'd wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Prosperous 2017.

All the best, from the Land Down Under.

I'm a physicist, at least in thoery.

But I'll answer anyway.
I don't know exactly where you read this, but I hope it's a reliable source (it does look reasonable and wikipedia reports similar numbers).

What you need to understand is that the range you were reading about is effective range. That is the range at which you could actually engage a target.
It doesn't mean the M203 will not travel further. It means you would not expect to hit anything. At least in real life.

Now, shooting it straight up or even at 45 degrees is something that probably something nobody in a combat situation would do. Straight up is just firing at yourself and at 45 degrees you really wouldn't know where it lands. It will probably go significantly further than 450 meters, but you since it's not practices for more than 450m, you will probably have no clew where it lands.

As for shooting straight up, I know it takes quite a long time to come back in the game. But it is expected. The 203 looses it's momentum going up until it gets to 0 and then it starts to gain momentum towards the ground because of gravity. All of this will take quite a while.

I also know that the US Army used actual weapon charctarisations to make this game, so I would expect the intial velocity of the projectile is what it is in real life (or close to it). I doubt air resisdence is taken into consideration in AA, but it doesn't really matter that much.

Both the initial velocity as well as the maximum height can be directly calculated from the time it took for the 203 to fall down (without taking into account air resisdance and assuming the same gravitational constant as in real life).

My apologies in advance for interjecting... but...
This post is the most awkward post I've ever read with respect to physics...

It's still beyond me why people care about Battletracker stats. It's not like you gain anything from it. No features in-game, no awards or unlocks. Nothing. No point.

General Chat / Re: WARNING Assist Spy on YOU
« on: Sunday, October 19, 2014, 04:52:12 AM »
The feature that allows screenshots to be taken has been removed from Assist v8.15. The update is scheduled to happen in the next several hours.
Anybody who has ever played a game that is protected by PunkBuster supplied by EvenBalance should already know that their software can take screen shots of you computers screen.

If Assist could figure out how to do this, I suspect no one would have problems with it.

Recently, I play the game on one screen and disable the other two.  This way I know the only image it will return is the game.  I personally never liked the TOS, but if I want to play the game, I have to learn to live within its boundaries.

Removing the screen grabber from 8.15 is probably a good thing, but alas, I suspect that if (once) script kiddies climb back onboard, the community will once again start to whine to Eliz and Co. to control the situation.  It's a clear case of "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" and I suspect that if this happens that Eliz, Spanky and the rest don't get paid enough (i.e. probably nothing) to give a damn anymore...

Voting is over.

The map will be updated within a few days.

Interesting, didn't realize that we were doing a simple majority.

You do realize that nades can't be thrown from spawn to spawn right?

That depends on the gravitation constant...

An unfair advantage is cheating.

Ok, I'll bite... and agree.

I recant my 2nd point, although I do not consider the USA having nuclear weapons cheating ... :)

And I am a person who will always bring a gun to a knife fight ... ha ha

The mouse macros weren't the biggest problem, the user.ini that players edited to take more shots and be more difficult to die were! That's what you have to fix (user.ini)! That ban was a total disrespect for those that use macros, because AA was never against macros, you can figure out it was permitted, and now you suddenly forbid macro use and ban many of the few remaining players from the AA.

BocaNegra, feel free to post the link where America's Army developers said macros are ok. Until you do, quit using that as an excuse. Is the game really worth keeping alive if it's full of cheaters?

I doubt you can edit the user.ini to shoot more often and even if you could, it will be detected. I also highly doubt you can make yourself more difficult to die in the user.ini. Feel free to prove me wrong with some proof.

A few comments...

1) The original developers were neither for nor against macros.  They were publically silent on the issue.
2) Macros do not equal to cheating, per se, but rather obtaining an unfair advantage, this is against the ethics of the game itself.  Sort like bringing a gun to a knife fight... you can do it and nothing stops you from doing it, but is it really fair?
3) The ini file does indeed have some options that allow an unfair advantage...  This is why CVAR checks were introduced in PB, so I don't get why Boca would even this this is a problem, because it is not.
4) The biggest problem in all games is the real-time injection of object code into the stack.  Properly designed, even the operating system has no idea what it going on.

I could comment on "hackers" versus script kiddies and the like.  In my opinion the latter are a scourge on gaming (as only an idiot would pay for "skilz"), the former I have respect for (as an engineer who has reverse engineered, i.e. hacked, both hardware and software in a former life).  BTW: I use the term "hacker" in the traditional sense, not the new found post-gaming era definition... Hacking used to be an honored tradition, but alas, it is now viewed in a poor light due to the negative connotations with the art...

Bottomline, If someone wanted to get an undetected advantage, it is simplier than anyone realizes.  I won't offer any guidance, but lateral thinking is all that it required (and a soldering gun).  If someone wants to cheat badly enough, nothing will stop them.  But ask yourself, is winning in a PC game so important that you are willing to cheat to get there?  Seems like a substitute for self-esteem... maybe you should see a psychiatrist.

but if this is checked "but basically the AA server queries the Auth server and it says "no"." and there is a no, so why a ban? only a kick would be enough, right. so if you have connection problems, you can try 1 minute later and you do not have to wait even 5 minutes.

This is what AAO did... kick only, until you could authorized via the auth servers...

Be wary of the multitude of cameras in Internet Cafe's. That's all I can say.

Zibi, come to AA PG.. much aa2 players are there.

Agreed... AA:PG seems to be the new place to hang out.

That said...  Australia still has a good old-school AA2 community... we play every Friday evening, filling the server...  the rest of the week, we are on AA:PG

84.241.96.220 is the ip
4 me is 127.0.0.1

i got de error : no record of this server on the assist master server. cant concet

You do not use localhost (127.0.0.1) as an entry point to your sever.  You should use the public IP address (84.241.96.220 in your case).

Note that if you run a separate server, your router needs to forward the game and query ports to that computer, not your client.

Server Support / Re: AA:ASSIST - Server Restart Script Needed - Linux
« on: Tuesday, April 15, 2014, 08:27:56 AM »
Hello Guys,

I need a server restart script for my americas army server. It should automatically restart my server if my "root server are going for reboot or something" and restart after crash.

Is it possible to get it from someone? It's for Linux (Debian)

Thanks a lot !

fyi

if you do decide to issue a start command in the rc3.d directory (as a link to init.d), then you need to serious consider what system commands you use, as there could be security issues.

I'd opt for crontab as a user that only has access to the 25Assist binary, cron'd every two minutes that check the server and then restarts it if the server binary is missing.

General Chat / Re: Issues getting Players to join AA2.5
« on: Thursday, March 27, 2014, 04:54:47 AM »
I think we would attract another playerbase. The kind of player that wants to get fast into the game. The kind of player that has no patience, the kind of player that thinks this is COD.

It's on the same floor as saying, why not track mods, it will make more people happy. Yes bu other people.

AA needs new players but not any kind of players. That's how I see it. I might be the only one though :D

There is nothing wrong with attracting a new player-base regardless of the underlying expectations.  Leading by example is the way to guide new players, not by eliminating all possibility that they will engage.  Leadership is the basis by which we, as a community, can direct the moral, ethics and behaviours of not only existing players, but new ones.  The ability to attract is more important than the ability to bar, as this basically condones an elitist mentality, which I assume (correctly I hope) is what we are trying to avoid.

Additionally, I am not of the opinion that tracking mods is a bad thing.  In fact, I see room to create more than just a myopic view of what this game can actually be.  There is still an old school fan-base who wishes to get back into the mix, but feels that, due to the elimination of their old account (post-US Army deprecation of the game), forces them to engage in a fruitless exercise of training once again.
