Title: New Website
Post by: Spanky on Saturday, March 17, 2012, 14:33:28 PM
Jared and I have been working pretty hard the last few days (feels like 2 weeks!) building a new forum theme, statistics and navigation. We have tested as much as we can and there's still a couple of things to fix but for the most part it should have all the features working.

If you have a problem or suggestion for any part of the new layout, post a topic here:
http://aao25.com/site-suggestions-chat-feedback/
Any screenshots would be helpful as well.

We will also be setting up a mobile theme so those of you on iPhones or any other handheld device will be able to read the forum without the clutter.

Thanks for being patient during the downtime!

Very nice layout, i like the colours and the new shutbox position. The new header is a pretty handy thing, too.

Site looks amazing. Shoutbox is kind of tweaky though. For example, if you post in the shoutbox from the Info page, it will take you to the home page.

Yea, that's just the default redirection, otherwise it takes you to a blank page. I could probably do it better with jQuery POST and GET down the road. It's just a basic replacement now that TinyPortal is uninstalled.

Glad you guys like it. It's still a Beta right now, a few more tweaks and updates will be coming but it's done for the most part.

A couple things I noticed.

There is no easy way to access your forum profile.
The avatar boxes are kinda small and instead of re-sizing an avatar that is too big, it just cuts off a good portion of it.
You can applaud or smite someone under their avatar but it doesn't actually show the numbers, making the system useless.

It looks a little cold to me meaby a nice warm dark red with black in it framework .
And yes the letters are a little to light that grey on the white.
thats my oinion and hope you take it as positive criticism.

Further its, how you say in  English  it looks  very tightly organized   in dutch  ( overzichtelijk strak)
Have pleasure in working in the new site.
best regards all

Killaman, Jared fixed the avatar boxes but since you previewed the site, you will probably have to Shift+F5 or CTRL+F5.

I will see about the Karma and forum profile.

Nah, most web stuff is cached like images Shift+F5 and CTRL+F5 force re-downloading of CSS styles and images.

Go to profile > modify profile> look and layout, and change the time offset until it is the correct time.

I'm glad the feed back of the re-design has been good. I will try some other font colors, by using black it makes the white to bright.

If I need to use white, usually I'll use something around #FAFAFA so it doesn't blast your eyes. But then I usually set all black elements to something around #222.

Although I'm fine with the white bg/grey text.

Any way users could choose a darker colour scheme for themselves? I cant use this grey on white shit.

Glad you like the site, thanks for the kind comments.

The following is a good example of how NOT to request a change:

Quote
philip: way to ruin aao25
Nate: thanks?
philip: grey on white man
Nate: calibrate your monitor
philip: its fine
philip: why would you go with a white colour scheme on a gaming website
Nate: why would you bitch to someone that spent many hours putting it together
philip: I love the layout
philip: just not the colours
philip: because I regularly use it
philip: and I dont like bright colour schemes
Nate: could have gone about it better
Nate: i'm inclined to just ignore you now
philip: fuck you are a soft cunt
philip: cant take criticism
philip: eat a dick

Luckily for mans, I don't care enough about TS to hop on, ask Killa for admin and ban you :)

I get a full and decently matching set between black and white with no outblowing, i agree that who has a badly set monitor while also have an outblown white. So it's a screen fault, set it up or buy a decent one (and i can tell a good monitor will also save your eyes).

Title: Re: New Website
Post by: Jared on Sunday, March 18, 2012, 11:42:37 AM
could go 1 or 5 shades even more

Any darker and it will be black, and the text will not be black.

The thing is why your all mad, isn't the fact that its white with grey text. It’s a case of the user’s power being seized by the designer, albeit a very tiny amount. People spent the time learning our old interface — they’ve invested this time — and as a result they’ve gained a little power in the world — that is, they’ve gained the ability to better control their environment. With every interface change, their level of control gets pushed back a little, and they have to reorient themselves around the new design. But what’s worse is probably not that people need to spend time learning the new interface — this probably won’t take long — but that they can feel power being taken away from them..

On most forums you are able to select a theme. Most people dont like being blinded at 4 am in the morning and therefore they like a darker theme.
I have a great solution, don't use your computer without a light on, it's bad for your eyes anyways.

Cite a source for that killa? I dont believe my eyes have been damaged.
It most likely won't cause any permanent damage, but it does cause your eyes to strain which isn't good short-term.

I honestly find it to be clearer than the previous forum version, now the blog and the forum are also joining the each other in a smoother way, you have a much less invasive shoutbox with no image posting available on it, and the useful bits of data right on top on the header. The layout is tidy and neat, and while there are a few tiny parts i don't like, the overall design is good.

Thanks for looking at it in a positive way Koden. We do still have some minor tweaking but functionally, it's better than the old site and that's why we released it.

i can see each and every square aswell, but i agree with mans, i like darker backgrounds over bright ones. just personal preference, feels easier on my eyes.

but i really like the lay out and how the 'chill boards' are below each main section. seems more organized. thanks for your time

In the Users Online section there doesn't seem to be any distinction between users on your Buddy List and those that are not. I know pretty much nobody uses the Buddy List but I do aaaand yeah now it's meaningless. Take it out, make buddies bold, or make no changes at all. It doesn't matter, I won't complain :p

Thats the best way to put it. A dark and light theme. Although that can get annoying for jared/spanky when they're doing work, they gotta change files in multiple folders. Scumbag SMF.

That's the important thing to remember. They don't owe us a dark theme. If they want to do the work then great, if not, so be it. They already spent time on this awesome theme. It's not like they're getting paid to do it.

Just an update;

Shoutbox now remembers what page you posted from, instead of blind redirecting you to the homepage.
Mobile theme is installed but disabled due to detection code issues. I've sent a message to the author to get it resolved.

There will be more minor updates but nothing should break and there should be no downtime.
