It looks like a huge improvement to me. So far though, it looks like it only appears on my videos...

I've seen the new player as well. I like it also, great improvement. It just feels more . . . web 2.0

The old player reminded me of the 90's where everyone wanted animated gifs and beveled edges for whatever reason.

They are onto some major development on Youtube's core. Looks pretty impressive.
I do, sporadically, read up their Development Articles/News on their blog.
