Title: Post Your Car!
Post by: Spanky on Friday, June 18, 2010, 00:12:43 AM
*IMAGES REMOVED*

Suggested by Blueblaster, here it is.

Ode to the Burby: a retired Forest Service rig, a 1992 Chevy Suburban, a family member that has been there AND done that.

It's been a rock-solid vehicle and after 10 years of use after it's retirement, has only just now started to need a little work. About 4 years ago, it had a tune-up and a few things done before the trip to Idaho. It got a new muffler, synthetic oil and tune-up for the tranny, brake job, new shocks, a o-ring for the driveline, just little stuff. A few months back, it needed a new power steering pump, water pump, oil cooler lines, and a new intake manifold gasket. The other day the alternator needed new bearings and the tensioner replaced. But, all that repair spans 10 years of ownership and some was voluntary. With the original cost of the vehicle and repairs, it's been a little under a grand a year to run.

Winter storage:

Fire watch:

Winter slip:

Colder than a witches titty:

Water pump giving up:

Oil cooler lines giving up:

Even with the repairs, no joke, couldn't ask for a better vehicle. It's done everything asked and more.

Sounds like a very reliable car and doesn't look bad either. I'll use this space for putting up my car probably tomorrow or the day after. Whenever I get some pictures.

I wish I had pic's of the cars we have had over the years. But I'll get a pic tomorrow of the one we drive now and I'll put a list of the ones we have owned. Latest one to first.

2004 Honda Odyssey-Silver- (Late 2009-Present)
1997 Ford Explorer-Blue-(Early 2009-late 2009) Great car we just couldn't afford the fuel this thing sucked down.
2001 Toyota 4Runner-Red- (Mid 2008-Early 09) Awesome car but sold it to get some cash and bought ^ off a friend for cheap.
1998 Ford 150 Longbed-Green-(Mid 08-Early 09) traded to contractor for a bathroom lol.
1996 Honda Civic-Black- (Early 07-mid 07) Got repo'd cause their records where wrong and they thought we had not paid on it in 3 months when we had.
1991 Toyota 4Runner-Silver- (Early 05-Early 07) Exploded in Arizona while doing a cross country move. Sold to a 4x4 shop in flagstaff. God I miss that car I learned to drive in it.
1997 Mercury Grand Marquis-White-(Mid 04-Early 05)Traded it in on the 4Runner after moving into the mountains.
1997 Oldsmobile Cutless Ceira-Red-(Mid 01-Mid 04) Water pump failed blew up. Head gasket blew up.
1994 Ford Taurus-Red- (98-Mid 01) I don't really recall what happened to this one lol. I know mom ran it into the house at one point but that wasn't why we got rid of it.

So yeah there is my list of cars since 1998 lol.

You ain't shittin. It's done everything without complaint. All these years, all the use, abuse and hours of running and no major work has been done to the engine and it runs so smooth.

Very eye catching, good way to advertise. Stupid question; did you design it and have it printed somewhere?
Title: Re: Post Your Car!
Post by: Jared on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 17:43:40 PM
I designed it,  i printed it at the school i was at, then applied it myself. Its funny because i have people pull up to me like wtf is on your car i just smile :D

Looks cool. Anyway to get it to "transition" onto the car instead of ending on the window and trunk?

Nice beemer btw.
Title: Re: Post Your Car!
Post by: Jared on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 21:57:41 PM
that right there cost about $500 so i didn't want to do anything more than that. There's really no way to transition because it printed on material then the material is put on the car. You can't match the cars paint.
Title: Re: Post Your Car!
Post by: BlueBlaster on Tuesday, November 23, 2010, 22:23:22 PM
When I figure out a way to transition it without painting the car, headshot will become a graphics production company.

The olds blew a headgasket and wasn't worth fixing so here's the "new-new" car. 1994 mazda protege or in other parts of the world a 323s. Its got a 1.8L inline four cylinder dual overhead cam (DOHC) motor. It needs a new radiator and some suspension work. It gets an average of 30mpg with as much as 39 highway.

Well having radiator problems just drops value. It's usually straightforward to replace them with a junkyard one plus you get epic $$ for the aluminum recycling of the old one. There's always Bar's Stop Leak too.

why not plug the holes with tig and use it to watercool ur computer for some serious 10.00ghz cpu overclocks

Because I'm not an idiot. And yes skrewy I know what to look for in a used car. All the issues with this car with the exception of putting new tires on it I can fix my self. I did the breaks today. The radiator is like 6 bolts and 60$ for a new one. And all the suspension parts are going to cost around 170$.

The radiator is like 6 bolts and 60$ for a new one.

Are you for real? That's nuts! Plus 1 for a small engine I guess, I think it's around $300 for a new one for our Suburban, $150 for a pressure-tested used one from a junkyard.

this is the radiator in my car, its quite costly at $315.00, but it has lifetime 'no questions asked' warranty even if i wreak it, or someone else hits my car i can get a new one.

yeah but ur car cost 60k more then his

wrong. I got my bmw for $4,500 USD. Plus the radiator is aftermarket, that's not stock. Also i can get raceland coilover kit for $319.00.  I would look to see if raceland makes a kit for your car knight.

btw why does Mazda's engine sit sideways?

What's involved in making a vehicle 4x4? Just adding a splitting gear at the tranny output shaft then a new front 4x4 axle?
Title: Re: Post Your Car!
Post by: .[Ak4].Chubbs on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, 21:04:49 PM
A lil more then that. If I wanted to do it the long way id have to get new tranny, transfer case, computer, driveshaft, real front axel, relocate the exaust, make a gear shift to engage the 4x4. and much more :P

Im jealous. I have no knowledge of vehicles and sometimes I feel like I shouldn't be allowed to drive it if I don't understand how it works.

I feel that same way about people and computers a little bit, and computers are easier to use and maintain than vehicles (for me at least).

I don't have one aswell. Aside of a crappy Lancia Y (Fiat engineered if you can call it so), which looks like this one -except it's blue- . It's my brother's ride, free time travelling and such.

Slow and quite awful. 1.2 liter 8valves engine, 60 hp. It's not even that cheap to move around with too.

Well petrol price has risen up to about 1,9 € per liter here (at this time in 2011 it was about 1,35).

Gas/petrol is "expensive" if you commute to work every day, especially for a lot of Americans, commuting an hour each way, every day.

For me it's 15 minutes to school and 20 minutes to work. When I was going to school (summer break :P) I spent about $40 per week on gas.

I commute an hour each way, i spend about $50 USD every 3 days, gas is about 3.95 gallon here.

Jared says he's paying petrol about 3,95 dollars/gallon, a gallon is about 3,78 liters so that means roughly 1,04 $ a liter...it can be expensive, lesser so with smaller cars/engines (which i guess aren't as much as popular as in Europe).

I commute about 25km forth and back every day for work using my scooter (1000km monthly), i just love the economy, spending around 45/50 € each month (about 28 liters of petrol) .

More people should do that. Or at least have a car that suits their needs. A lot of idiots drive trucks to construction work but all they need to bring is a toolbox and a 2-door, 3/4-cylinder car would do just fine.

I have to drive the freeway, so i can't use a scooter they don't go fast enough.

its not redneck enough chubbs, stick a gun rack on it.

And a 18" lift with tires twice as wide and 10x as knobby as your current ones.
[/sarcasm]

Really though, good job on having practical vehicles and not something that looks like it belongs off road or on a race track.

Yep. Actually they are, in my opinion, the best motors made.

Fuck yea. If you take care of them, those motors last for fucking ever. Seals go bad after about 80K miles, but that's normal.

LOL a Dynamark 11-32 with a peerless 5 speed transmission. It seemed a little slugish with the 11 horse briggs, so I outfitted it with a 50hp 396cc Rotax and a set of 44mm Mikuni carbs in place the stock HD Tillotsons. Suppose to be at or just over 63hp now. It originally still had the hood but it decided it wanted to ride me. Trying to find another hood and need to gear it up some more and install the hitch and wheelie bars. Then my son is going to learn how to groove and cut tires.  :D :D I hate that, smoke and rubber everywhere. To tight to got buy an electric planer like we use to use years ago on full size tractor tires.

Cool, help me get two standard bore pistons and ring sets for that motor. For this motor they are near to impossible to find where I live. I found a aftermarket set on ebay and had to mortgage the house and deliver my first born.  :P Seriously I do need to find a set though.

cant you get them fabricated? If the company i work for cant source pretty much anything they try to make what they can, it can be pretty hard without drawings but its doable. But it could be expensive as if it takes them a few tries the material and labour charges will mount up. I work for a hydraulic company specialising in oil purifiers. But any good engineering firm should be able to replicate it. But you would end up playing more than the aftermarket kit =(

Oh I am sure it can be done, but it wouldn't be cost effective for a company to set up and for tooling to make just two pistons. If I was still in school I could cast them and turn them myself or better yet cut them from billet since that crazy thing can hit 11,000 rpms and a void in the casting may turn things into a grenade. But I don't trust my hands running a mill or lathe anymore or my eyes. I was told I got extremely lucky when I found the two new wiesco pistons because they haven't made them in years. Other option is to find a set of 440 jugs, heads, and pistons which I been told are everywhere just have come off around something like $400-$500. Damn I must be getting old, here I am worrying about $500 and in 2004 I never thought a bit about spending upwards of $180,000 building a component diesel super stock tractor. Of course I did that for someone else and didn't have cough up more money when it decides to spit out a turbo or lock up a $18,000 sigma injection pump.

As for the plates, in the US, cars often only have one and that's in the back. They like it in the rear ;)

I know  -  tried to be funny

In South Africa they made me one out of fibreglass for my bike - always pulled me over for it - guess it wasn't quite legal

I had a Kawasaki ZZR 600 tuned by Speedbike in Klerksdorp. Those were the days when we met on the Kyalami Racetrack or going wild on the highway.
Now I am too old for a fast bike like that. I got an old Yamaha XT 500 parked in Greece for when I am there. You can still fix them bikes yourself - no electronic crap.

I don't have pictures - they all burned in a fire

Personally, I'd never own a BMW, even a lease. Nice when they're new but it goes downhill quick. Anyway, I think it's funny the people that spend a lot of time making their cars look clean and pristine. Especially the ones that put goop on their tire sidewalls that actually damages the tires.

Downhill? How many bmws have you owned? Yeah there were some bad engine models but overall its the best car you can own aslong as youre willing to service it as youre supposed. A 10 year old bmw is probably better than any american trash nowadays. And im talking about driving characteristics and interior. Most old bmws can do 300k KMs easy and will run as new if maintained well.

I believe they have separate factories for BMW in the US, so who knows maybe they make a different quality car for the US. I know a lot of car manufacturers make totally different cars for the US and European markets.

I go by what I see. They're also expensive to maintain or repair since they're so complex. Same for Mercedes. 300,000 KM isn't much. I'm up past 365,000 KM in my Ford Explorer and looking at the bottom end of the engine the other day, there's a LOT of life left. There's plenty of Toyotas, Hondas and Fords that run up past 500,000 KM. Like you said, it's all in maintenance but being able to afford that maintenance is also key. Not to mention, higher insurance rates too.

Well its has a lot of electronic stuff going on inside so obviusly something might fail eventually.. If you service it when youre supposed to it will run for decades.. And yea i believe you about your ford, old cars were built 100 times better than nowadays, my dad bought a 94 mondeo when it came out and it did 400k without even changing the clutch.. But if you look at new models theyre just awfull, if you want something reliable you go europe/asian brands. Dunno about inssurance and hows it there but heres its by engine size so it doesnt matter what brand the car is.

For insurance, the more "luxury" and newer a car is, the higher the rates. I do agree that American cars are pretty shitty. Chevy went downhill quick in the late 90's and has pretty much stayed there. Dodge has always had problems with bodys and electronics. Ford can still be good depending on which models you choose. Asian cars are where it's at for true long-term dependable and cheap maintenance. Euros can be nice but a lot are over engineered and require more specialized maintenance, though, I'm not super familiar with all the brands. Who knows though, 10 years from now, we'll be able to see the reliability of modern highly electronic cars and see if they hold up. I'm all for electronics and sweet features but there's a lot of cheap electronics out there that die in a few years, I just hope cars are held to much higher standards. I'm blown away that the computer in my 23 year old car still works great.

True shit guys. Back in the days cars were made to last. Now a days you can barely get 300tkm and car is at the end of it's life span. The thing that I like about newer cars is I can just plug it to a laptop and it shows me right away what's seized.  :) Couldn't be more easy. Older cars need more knowledge in my opinion.

I'm currently running with A4 1.8T quattro avant -98 model. At the moment I'm selling this one and going to get newer with larger engine and of course quattro.

That's the one thing that's disappointing. It would be great to see fuel trim and what the sensors are doing. But, pre-OBD2, the computer systems were very simple. A lot of them, like in mine, can throw codes that make it easier to figure out what's going on and there's not many systems you have to check.

I love the idea of more things being computerized in cars, you can get much more precision and automation but longevity is a concern. I'm utterly blown away that the computer in my 23 year old vehicle still works. I get computer parts in today that are 3 years old and they've failed. I would like to see automakers take more time in building vehicles. Better wiring, more care into connections, using dielectric grease from the factory and simple things like anti-seize on bolts. There's so many things that can be done at the factory easily to make repairs go smoother.

I totally get what you're saying, Spanky.

However, nowadays it's all about the money. And you get more money if your customer has to buy a new car in 5 years rather than 25 years. I am certain manufacturers know exactly where their cars' shortcomings are and they intend to keep them so people would buy a new car soon rather than spending their whole life driving one car. It's all about the "business". There's tons of people who learn this shit at university. In order for a business idea to be good, it has to be long lasting. If you create a car people can use their whole life, you can only sell one per person, but having them buy a new one every couple of year dramatically increases the longevity of the business model.

This is not just about cars, though. It's the same in any industry nowadays. For example, hundreds of years ago they made glass that was as strong as stone. However, it takes longer to manufacture and then people wouldn't need a new one soon enough, which is why nowadays most glass that's made will break from a feather dropping on it (not literally, of course).

Yep, I agree Teddy. It's pretty pathetic. More manufacturers need to take more pride in things. In my business, I only use quality parts to do repairs. I tell customers that if I do my job right, I won't see them again. It costs them more money but in the long run they'll be happier and more loyal. Manufacturers need to realize this and stop trying to be competitive and only focusing on pricing. I think our only saving grace in the automotive industry is Elon Musk. He's doing the best he can to prove his product and company and there's no way he'll compete on price so he's going for quality, reliability and customer service.

same here.  Business administration.

That's the most annoying thing nowadays.  Sometimes they just make one cheap part less lasting.  But in order to change it it will cost a lot later

I realize this post was a while ago but I just wanted to correct you. It depends on what state you are in. Here in Michigan you only have 1 license plate on the back. You don't get one for the front.
https://www.cars.com/articles/2013/10/how-many-states-require-front-license-plates/ (https://www.cars.com/articles/2013/10/how-many-states-require-front-license-plates/)

Knowing you posted this when you still lived in Illinois you should be happy to see that Florida doesn't require a front license plate either. :P

On topic though, I recently purchased a 2014 Kawasaki Ninja 300 as my first bike.

Aside from being a blast to ride, the thing is awesome on gas too, getting almost 70mpg. It will save me a lot of gas money going to school and work. The insurance is also surprisingly cheap, I'm only paying about $45/month, which is less than half of what I pay for my car.
I just wish I lived further south so I could ride it for a larger portion of the year. My car is a 2001 Ford Taurus if I never posted it before.

lolz. buying a gixxer as your first bike typically ends up with you on the pavement and a hole in your wallet for repairs and medical bills. :P
The 300 is a great bike to start on and resells for almost as much as you buy it for. In a year or 2 I'll sell it and get something bigger.

Just realized I never formally introduced mine. It's funny, at the beginning of this thread, I knew next to nothing about engine repairs or automotive work and here I am having a pretty decent tool collection for a DIY'er and I've been in just about every nook and cranny of my affectionately named 'Blue Bomb':

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/464376/vehicles/1991%20Explorer/Pictures/CameraZOOM-20150527175320046.jpg

Hauling some compost:

The most recent surgery I did on her:

I have more money into her than she's worth and she's not perfect but she's mine and 100% paid for. Never let me down, even when she's throwing a fit.

A quick list of the things I've done;
