I've spent some time creating a map from scratch, which is something I really haven't done before, aside from Spankyville but that was just for lulz. This thread will be about updates and suggestions for the map. Here's what it looks like so far:

The distance fog really changes the map feel.

A bright map with no fog, along with bright colours? Hey that might be interesting. I noticed a bridge, from another pic you posted earlier.
p.s. didnt noticed that fog on the right, i thought was behind and part of the background.

I'm still tweaking it a lot. The fog doesn't behave how I want and I simply added it based upon images from Crysis. The more I work on this map, the more I realize it looks like other maps. Woodland Outpost, Mountain Ambush... *sigh*

And about the river, I think you can make a river like in Sf Oasis, that you can walk through the river to the other side of the river. You don't need to that in the whole river, but you can make in parts were it could be deeper.

Looks cool! On a side note do you have any files from the maps I made about 3 years ago lol? One was a hosp mod and I don't care to much about that but the other was a small town with a road and stuff

Latest screenshot, got some buildings with some sexy lighting going. I think I might add a road and go with Jared's idea a little bit. Kind of like an IED perhaps where enemy forces are decending upon the road and the ambushed team has the shitty houses for cover.... anyway, here it is:

I like the overall brightness and those shadows casting nicely.
p.s. a couple trees went onto the bridge.

Anyway, thanks guys :) Still messing about but I think the buildings will add depth. I'm hating the fog right now and not too sure about what to do with the boundaries yet but it will come.

Are the decolayers set to bstaticlighting true?

I don't think they have that property. Decolayers don't have great lighting. I can set them to have lighting but then they'll be black on one side and normal on the other, it looks bad. Right now, they only follow terrain lighting so they'll be dimmer wherever the terrain is shadowed.
I got it down to about 350k triangles for the decolayers which helps FPS quite a bit but I'll have to go lower. The buildings on the map look mighty sexy right now.

The road adds some good change to the map. Are you going to drop off one end of the map and make the river flow into a waterfall? The road can end with that one highway static mesh. That's a boundary on one side :D

Originally I was going to have a waterfall come down onto the map from above, like Sniper Canyon. As far as boundaries, I was just going to have an oval shape of playerblocks around the map and figure the fog will blend in enough to make the edges un-noticeable.

For objectives, I'm thinking about the double-objective BF conquest style. You have to secure the buildings and 2 boats on the river. This way both teams spawn close to an objective so they ultimately have to cross each other or flank to get to the other objective.

Yeh quite a good idea, and the spawn when we start like 1st group on the left 2nd in the middle 3rd on the right, so they have to go to the objective by where they are, like a further distance, if you know what i mean not having spawn with all ppl at the same spot like spreading in the groups in spawn.:)

It's a system where every objects can be taken by both teams, and every object is needed to win. It's in Sandstorm, Urban Assault and in the ported Interdiction, it just need to be setted as an object that can be taken by a team, and then taken back by the other team (BTakeTurns). Of course that it's meant for a "Take and Hold" gameplay (pointing out cause capturing and holding are quite different concepts).
You need to set up all of the 3 objs as needed to win, because otherwise no one would bother taking the one not needed to win (much like the Control Panel in Pipeline - a more important obj vs 3 lesser important ones). Unless Spanky can set it up so you can take a random 2 of the overall 3 objs available to win, it's something that probably can be done and Spanky might find out a way to do that.

Nah, I just have 2 objectives setup now. Secure the buildings and secure the boats on the river. Each team spawns close to 1 objective, it takes 20 seconds to capture if a team member remains in the radius of the objective.

Thanks Mister. I've always found creating maps from scratch incredibly hard. It's very easy for me to edit existing maps but just thinking up and starting with a basic idea is difficult.

I thought of a different way to take the map. I hated having a lack of lighting on the trees as well as a boring layout. I think those twisted rotted trees are going to make the map great. It will provide cover in all directions as well as a unique look in every direction. The problem is, to achieve the best look, I'll have to place each tree manually -_-

I think the map would be cool at night if you add like a spooky mist (if that's even possible) The trees kinda give off a spooky vibe.

I could but it would be a bit difficult and would have to be done when the map is 100% finished, otherwise I would be going around adding/changing/fixing bugs on 2 copies.

I tried adding a dusk kinda feel but instead went with more fog and a gradient for the sky so it will be easier to see people. It's a lot more blended now.

I'm going to postpone this map for quite a while. I'm just not feeling the desire to work anymore. I've entirely lost interest in AA and maps. I feel like 2.5 is going back to old habits and that's all I'll say about that.
This site will stay up so no worries on that. I'll help out when my help is needed but I'm just not motivated to contribute anymore. If someone else wants to work on this map some more, go for it. Consider this my 7th resignation.

I'll definitely look at it and see if I want to do anything. My interest in AA may be dwindling but I love making maps. It's fun to me.

I still think it is. The issue I have is that there was good feedback for the map and Undisputed reminded me that there's people that are looking forward to it. Do I throw away the work and effort that I've put into it just because I'm unwilling to work on AA? Or do I spend a little bit of time and finish what I started?

Its defiantly different, It would be very fun to play in a jungle environment. also im pretty sure there's no other map that has a good forest without obnoxiously mountainous terrain to overpower forest play. (i don't count interdiciton)

agreed, but Spanky as a mapper would say the contrary :D, I think he prefers maap Pipe than any other.
@Spanky: keep it simple, also I don't think it needs too much Trees, do not add too much annoying sounds like in urban assault :D, leave a good ammount of Goal/Leader/Win points :D and it will be overplayed, not only because of score, but for how great the map is :D

You guys have given me motivation and reason to keep working on it so I will :) If you have any suggestions on the map, I'll add them.
Right now, I'm thinking of trees (obviously), moving tire swing by the buildings, random bird sounds triggered when you walk around, spooky wind or other sounds, a couple cars or perhaps a junkpile between creek and buildings, maybe a shack by the river bridge for objective cover.

There has to be a road for the homes... Plus, the scenario is kind of that a vehicle break-down or IED caused the convoy on the road to stop and secure the buildings for the night which are actually hostile then escape in the boats.

small fence around the buildings for more cover. not like a full fence with one way to get in but maybe section it off at 3-5 places

Undisputed, that kind of detail isn't exactly possible in AA. I have another version of Forest with greenery much less than that and it affects FPS so badly that I wouldn't release it. I am trying to make up for it with small bushes and ground cover. I also might make a day version of the map.
Jason, the fence is a good idea. Maybe even one that could be shot to fall over/knocked down.

15~FPS @ 1360x768, FOV= 106.40, AA 8x, AF 16x, All High in-game + some ini tweaks,
for some reason AA and/or AF only works fine in OpenGL :D.
these houses remind me of the houses in stalker Clear Sky.

What, no river? The spawn points are on one side of the river, the houses on the other. You would literally have to cross the river in order to see the buildings.

Over a year later and I'm bumping this dead thing to say I've been playing with the fog a little bit and seem to have found a result I like:

Keep in mind, that's without the distance fog. It's hard to see much detail with all the fog enabled :D

No but it's bound to be either terrain polys (which I won't do anything about) or the fog emitters (which I could fix semi-easily).

I don't see it being much of a problem either way. Most people that play this now have PCs more than capable of coping with it. Hell, most of the "pro" players play with everything on low except player detail anyways.
I'm really looking forward to seeing how this turns out. :)
Also, now that we're on the subject, in your old versions of the map you had 2 giant windows randomly placed (1 was in the river) and me and Blue couldn't figure out what for. Any comment on that? :P

I would like so much to contribute and offer maps to the community as all the tools needed
are already on my PC (Unreal Ed etc) but i have no time at all until September to get on it,
because my parents just sold their house in Paris to move to Germany. They bought a flat
here (about 1800 sq²) and August is gonna be hell for me, coz i will have to do the flooring (Tiles),
wait for the trucks, unload them and set the furniture, rebuild the kitchen etc..
I will then move myself into my own flat that i bought 5 months ago and do the same shit and
only afterwards i will have time to seriously start with map creation.

Get inside the building w/e and Rescue the hostage(s), with random spawn locations for the hostage(s).

I don't really think hostages add to the creep factor. Right now it's a double-attack map. One team has to get to the boats, the other team has to secure the buildings. It takes 15 seconds or so to activate the objective so that kind of adds more tension to the map.
