Title: Petrol
Post by: Alex on Sunday, November 25, 2012, 03:34:22 AM
I've been working on this on and off for quite some time now and I was so bored I took tonight to add a lot to it. :P I decided to make a short video.

looks great! its like a BF/COD map, where you can enter in every place and get to the roofs etc :) you do not see much of this in AA.

just to clarify, maps will be released, not sure if in the 7.14 update, probabilly in the 7.15/20 update(we wil jump to 7.20 I guess, dont be afraid lol) but thats up to ELiZ.

Great map, but make it M16 please.
It is m16 and regular weapons. The only reason the video has an sf gun is because that's what I typed in the console when I opened my map through the console.

New update:

That is NOT the weapons for the map, they are the standard R/AR/S weapons. Version says 2.4.1 because I took the video from the editor which is 2.4.1.

I've been considering a sewer system for a while and I might try to make one when I get home from work tonight. We'll see how it goes.

There is a mAAp update planned for sometime in January.

I looked at adding sewers to Petrol, I actually spent over 2 hours adding stuff to see how it would work, and I decided that the map would be better without them.Although it's not a large map it's simply too big to have small sewers like Mout Mckenna does. They would either be mind explodingly (yes I just made that word up) complex or very simple to the point that and all you would do is spam to the other end and kill someone. It's better without them. Thanks for the suggestion though Jason. I wish more people would come up with ideas for maps. :)

Killa, people are going apeshit for your map!

*EDIT*
Also, get rid of the medic strykers. They're sucking up 80,000 polygons and that's causing FPS drop. If you need SOME kind of vehicle, maybe use the crappy hummers at M-Vehicles.Hummer_Cammo.

Then there's 60-70,000 in trees as well. You can delete maybe half before it starts looking bad. The strykers though, they gotta go!

Just wanted to say this map is really nice. It's so realistic, seriously. Only negative point for me is the freezing of my screen, because I think there are too much details for my little laptop ;)

Also, I don't think it's any more camper friendly than any other map. It's dual Assault so one team can't just camp and win.

There are 3 objectives. One in the bus in the middle, one in the basement in the building on the one side and one on the third floor in the building on the other side. With smoke each side can easily get a side objective a piece, but the middle one is the most difficult.

I'm going to look into making overhead images of a lot of mAAps to use with SAI.
Title: Re: Petrol
Post by: Alex on Saturday, August 24, 2013, 02:02:18 AM
So I spent last night and some of tonight editing/fixing the map. Here is a list of what I did.

- Turned restaurant into radio station. The building on the outside is the same, just new interior. I though the restaurant was too boring.
- You can now walk behind the radio station(formerly restaurant) between it and the river.
- Fixed the train depot doors. They no longer go through the sidewalk.
- Added plank to get onto the gas pump roof from the gas station roof
- Added boxes to the dumpster behind the gas station. No more getting stuck in them. :P
- Various lighting and mesh fixes.
- Added bushes and various obstacles for more cover. Also removed some useless stuff.
- Performance should be a little bit better.

Not much has really changed to the overall look but I might make a video.

may I make a suggestion? placing a small 1 cardboard box on the inside of both of the dumpsters (instead of big boxes) that way a player can still get in there (for cover when 1 side rushes hardcore) and the cardboard box will allow a player inside the dumpster to jump on it and exit the dumpster easily. anyone have opinions on this and killa I would like Ur opinon

Alright. I've spent a lot of time doing some fixes to the map. You can refer to my previous list on most of them. I have fixed some other stuff I forgot to mention like the Objective letters are now A,B, and C instead of all being A. :P

I have almost completely redone the lighting. The lighting is stolen Inspired from Spanky's mAAp Pipeline. It still doesn't look as good as mAAp Pipeline's, but it's definitely better than the lighting Petrol had before. More work will likely be done but I figured I'd give an update.

Here are some 1080p Screenshots for ya guys.

Its very clean, Which is good.
Now add some atmosphere, Some fog maybe? or a sandstorm copied and pasted from sf sandstorm? or rain.

As of right now I do have some fog/dust moving throughout the city. I want more but the problem is that it goes through BSP (so you have moving fog/dust in buildings) and I have yet to figure out how to stop that. I'll look into it again but I'm not promising anything. Thanks for the comment though.

Dockside doesn't have rain. I don't think any AA map does. I do love those moving trees though.

I can't seem to get the rain to even show up. It doesn't help that you can't view weather effects in the editor.
I would just copy the one from Blizzard and mess around with it but trying to paste it into Petrol crashes the editor. :P

Shipment the most laggest map in the game, it could be caused of the rain and the texture, or because its a small map and lots of players playing it, anyways can you guys get rid of it, or fix it? also i don't like petrol because its a big map that no one plays, not realistic at all...

How so?

Also, we have 24 players playing it the other night on the Mafioso server.
The map isn't even big. It's smaller than 90% of AA maps.

We don't have any lined up right now but that's certainly possible in the future. I know Spanky was working on a forest map. I'm not sure where he is on it though.

Petrol is a great map, not to mention Killaman is working on fixing the map and optimizing it as much as he can. We get a lot of players in when we host Petrol.

as far as new maps, I plan on making 1 or 2 in future, but don't expect release's for sometime and that's only if the dev's approves the map. I know there's at least 3 maps being fixed/updated. Those maps would be Petrol, Breakout and Spankys Pipeline.

But we prob needs to stay on topic here which is Petrol. So far nice work on it Killaman. Even though its not finalized yet, I'm still noticing it runs a bit smoother on my setup.

I really wonder if you guys have experienced real life at all. Have you ever heard a downpour of rain? Compare the map's rain sound with footsteps and gunfire, it's pretty realistic. Don't bitch about it just because you can't hear where the enemy is, that's the point.

As for lag/FPS, you must have an ancient computer because I've played Shipment on varying hardware (currently with a 5 year old GPU) and FPS doesn't drop. We were playing it the other day on the dev server and nobody complained about any kind of lag there either. Even Possessed was on there...

Well my though was that the military placed it there so they could get across and get a better position on the enemy. I wanted it to be a board to be more realistic but I couldn't actually find any in the meshes.
I thought it would be fairer to have another roof for that side since the other side has 2.

The layout isn't going to change anymore so you can make the image if you'd like.

Looked around the map some more. I'd suggest turning those 4 tunnel looking things on the edge of the map into meshes as well as some of the decorations on the fast food rooftop. Same for the signs at the gas pump, maybe even the gas pumps themselves. There's still a TON of BSP cuts on the map. Wouldn't hurt.

Other than that, I'm really liking it Killa :)

*EDIT*
The little grass meshes should have all collision options set to false so players can lay in them and so they don't stop bullets/coronas.

Cull the light hazes beyond a distance of 500 or so.
Cull small objects like light figures (especially ones behind coronas and hazes)
Re-jigger the antiportals
Increase the gigahertz

I did a lot of optimization last night. Got rid of 28K polys and set cull distance on a bunch of stuff. There's a lot of BSP that needs to be optimized and converted to staticmeshes too, I'll work on that later.

The version on Dropbox has a pretty big FPS boost on my machine.
