Title: City Block Map
Post by: Alex on Friday, March 09, 2012, 12:31:39 PM
So with a ton of help from Spanky I've been working on an AA map for 2.5. It's my first AA map. It's currently titled City Block but that may change.

Update:
Sky now shows stars with clouds (stars may be hard to see in low res video)
Added road lines to side streets
Added dividers to 2 main roads with trees
Some alignment adjusting
Lighting tweaks

UPDATE 2:
Lighting fixes
Zone Portal Fixes
Added Two Objectives
Added Spawns

Yeah. I have a star texture there but it seems to not show in game. It's on my to-do list for fixes. :P This is more of a preview than anything.

:D i really like the overall design! If you want a few more hints and tips for the overall design, try looking for "Crimson Sunset", it was a map made by 151Alpha and it has some nice adds that goes in a similar direction i think. Anyway nice to see a map that looks and probably plays differently in respect to many other ones.

Looking great. What was the old mAAp pack map that took place on a city block? Where you could get onto the roof and then jump outside the map and run around til everyone got tired of waiting for you to die and left the server then you were lonely?

I don't recall a map like that. Urban Defense you could get on a roof but I don't remember being able to get outside the map.

That door in the beginning was funny. Needs moar 2-way movers. Looks like the overall layout is done and now needs some life. Like post boxes and benches and trash cans :)

Yeah, I have to redo the doors on that building, but I keep putting it off because it's not the most fun thing to do. There are already a few benches and what not but I plan on adding a lot more. Just trying to fix up the main map before I put too much crap in it.

Updated the OP with some fixes and some 1080p screenshots. I would do a 1080p video but fraps sucks video size wise. Anyone know of a good program to record videos where a 1:30 video doesn't turn out to be 3gb?

So far it is a dual assault map, like Urban. If anyone has some suggestions I'd love to hear them. :)

Use fraps then run it through Movie Maker which will make a video something like 100mb or so (it will tell you when you go to upload it through Movie Maker).

I did that and saved it through Movie Maker but all it did was add a thick black border around my video and make the whole video look bad.

I usually re-encode with xvid's included mini converter. Set the b-frames and i-frames from 3 to 5 and you get a decently sized video to upload. Although that method is a bit more advanced than putting it through movie maker. Nothings wrong with movie maker though.

The map is starting to get some life :D

Then you didn't do it right because if you feed 1920x1080 (make sure fraps is set to full screen, not half) video to Movie Maker, it will output 1080p with visible quality loss but it's acceptable for how fast and easy it is.

lmao, movie maker was set to 4:3. I figured it would auto adjust to the video.

The map is kinda too small for SF weapons (only ones that come with door breaches as far as I know). I currently have the weapons on M16's AR's and S24's

You can add breachers with AddedInventory. It's up to you though. I just want more mAAps to have more dynamic gameplay elements.

Well if you can find a good place to put a breach-able door I'm definitely open to the idea. The problem is I can't find a place to put one that wouldn't be completely useless. Door breaches are cool on maps like SF Dockside because it is in the center of the map and the lower cargo is often an objective so it's important.

How about a 3rd objective that is instant win if you capture it. But it's in a building with a breachable door. You would have to make the interior so that if some team does go in, the opposing team should have an time killing them so that it's not too easy to take the objective quickly. Objective could be on the second floor possibly (think how breakout has the open top floor which is easily nade-able from the bottom floor). OR you could increase the time it takes to capture the objective.

That's a pretty good idea. I'm thinking of putting a 2 story building and having a lot of windows and the objective on the second floor. Breachable doors on the bottom.

It's too small for SF weapons and everyone with a 203 would just kill the fun. It's like doing SF on Urban Assault, 203's flying everywhere to the point where it's just not fun anymore.

+1, shooting a m203 requires very basic skills, makes little to no fun and by today it has become the new Lame Weapon of choice.

P.s. you said it is too small for SF weapons, but you're equipping some slots with an s24? I'm confuzzeled.

Ran into a small problem with the breachable doors. They work and you can blow them up with breaches, but you can also open them from both sides using E. I have no idea how to stop this from happening.

I think you need to open the object category for the mover actor. Change the inital state. I can't remember what all the initial states are, but you should be able to figure out which one to set by name.

The funny part is I copied the doors right from Dockside, and yet they don't work like they should. That leads me to believe something other than the door is set to block players from opening it.

Also, there will be nightvision since it's a night map.

If you take a look at the doors I put in Glass Kill House, they don't open with E. They open when the objective is completed.

hm, I'm actually thinking about making it not open normally from the inside. That gets rid of 2 problems, I don't have to sit here and try to figure out how they did it (door triggers are apparently for the fire alarms)  and it also gets rid of the door breacher glitch where if you open the door when a breacher is on it, the breacher disappears.

New video with new objective building only enter-able by breach-able doors.

The audio is way behind the video (fraps fucked it up) and I didn't notice it until I uploaded it to youtube. Was going to take off the audio but apparently youtube doesn't let you do that as far as I can tell. Anyways, just mute it or something. :P

Tried the map today and noticed there are 2 objectives, one takes turns (needed to win), placed outside in the park, and the other one (doesn't take turns, not needed to win) placed at the 1st floor. I noticed you can actually get the 2nd objective in a pretty safe way, as there no sniping point that covers that part of the building. I was wondering if that's a choice by design cause while it's gonna be a pain in the ass to defend the park objective (well, you can still do it by laying in the fountain, lol) it will be pretty easy to complete the 1st floor one.

There are 3 objectives. There is one in the park and one in the cafe. You need both to win (take turns). Then there is one on the second floor of the building that is an instant win if taken. I understand how the park could be difficult to defend while the cafe would be easy, I'll take a look at it later.

I'd have to play it to think of any ideas, it looks pretty good right now. Although there is that one building next to the courtyard with the ladder. The entrance is just a big hole hehe. Put that rollup garage mesh halfway up, unless you can think of something better. Because it looks kinda odd without anything.

add a ladder to the obj roof with another breachable door down the stairs. on either s, east or west side, like a fire escape

Also make the cat walk have a ladder up to the top of obj - also accessing the roof breachable door.

Well I wasted spent the last couple of nights fixing up/editing City Block to make it better/look more like a real city.

City Block v4.0 Custom AA 2.5 Map (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmJMGfswg1s#ws)

I also added a ladder to get on top of the obj building from the warehouse roof.

List of Changes/Fixes
- fence inside obj building is no longer walk through-able. :P
- converted old laundromat to a restaurant.
- added new laundromat where the tall building with the sniper used to be.
- added various traffic.
- revamped the warehouse to have a truck unloading area as well as a truck. removed open front entrance.
- completely revamped the offices. It is now mostly glass. The roof is no longer accessible.
- redone textures for some buildings

DAT Glass.  Building looks really nice.

The only i saw that i didn't care for was the loading dock, going up stairs just to go back down them. I would make the floor inside match the height of the loading dock, and make stairs to every entrance.

Yeah. There is a spot near the second floor objectives where you can go prone and go up to the glass and shoot through it. This was fixed with later versions but not on 2.5 so I fixed that.

I'm going to make a final run through the map and maybe change a few things around. You can push them out tomorrow if you'd like. :)

New version of City Block is coming soon with a lot of changes. Got rid of the big green obj building and replaced it with a new Buckets location and apartments. Also added a gas station on the same corner. I completely redid the cafe outside are and restaurant building.
On top of that the map is updated to 34 spawns and the spawns are now random between the 2 spawn points.

I know petrol has fps issues but this is the first I'm hearing of issues on city block from someone with a half decent pc.
That being said, there are still fixes and optimization to do before the next update.
