Title: [mAAp] Pipeline - Maintenance Tunnels
Post by: Spanky on Friday, August 16, 2013, 00:21:43 AM
The maintenance tunnels on mAAp PIpeline have red lights that you can turn on/off. They're dynamic lights and it adds something unique to the gameplay. However, they bother me. They don't look that great and while the tunnels are creepy, it's mostly because they're dark. I want it stressed and to do that you need shadows and brilliant textures and I just can't get that with dynamic lights. It's the reason the bathroom lights can't be turned on/off anymore. It looks so much better.

So, what I'm asking is, what does the community like?

This:

Should the lights down there be a specific color/hue? Should there be a lot of light or spots of light with fixtures spread out?

ohhhh i liked that first one obviously cause thats what i play now. but that bottom one, WOW that looks nice. Space the lights out abit and i think we have a hit

like maybe take out that middle light and see what that looks like

Tight wad oil companys probably wouldn't spend the money on the nice white and bright lighting, but that would make deciding if an enemy was there or a friendly some what easier. I would go for the darker lit tunnels just to make it a little more interesting.

I could delete the middle one and go for a more brownish/yellowish light instead of pure white.

I prefer the dark tunnels and red lights.

Middle light removed, first light added more brown/yellow hue:

I could probably space them out even further.

i mean i like the dark tunnels, but alot of the players dont like it and we want them to play a lil more. i mean we could say "your stuck with whatwe give u" or we could make some small edits. im good either way, but i think that new ss u made is about right on, space them out further and make the hue all brownish/ yellow. im thinking we still want some dark shadow spots in the tunnels just not way too much. but this is all just my opinion and what i have heard from players in our server.

space the lights out a bit more, and add the brwnish, yellow hues to it

Damn Spank i fell asleep yesterday didn't wake up till now...
My preference definitely goes to the second alternative in your first post,
I want to have an "army" feeling when i play, not a "quake" or "resident evil" one  :D

This here looks like the best of all three to my noob eyes.  It not to dark and doesn't look as if your a deer in spot light.  ;)

I like it, perhaps a couple lights bulbs on the sides, looks really good.

I've done 2 tunnels so far, further playing around with the hue and amount of light, this is what I've got thus far:

With the steam in the hallway, it's still pretty tough to see to the end. I think adding a bit of cover will help too.

*EDIT*
Looking at the screenshots now, I think I need to go less on the saturation, it just doesn't look like a fluorescent light should.

i just played through it spanky and i must say, i love that the new walls assault spawn around the guard tower. The maintenance tunnels look great. I also love the new roof ornaments and am in awe of the water squirting up from the pipe break. your doing a really excellent job. looking really good to me.

I haven't touched those in a long time, still seeing new items? Quite a few things are high detail-only, to help those with low FPS.

Glad you like the walls. AA3 and old Pipeline had them so I decided to re-add them and they look a fair bit better. No need for the guard tower being used. Also, if you crouch near the walls, it gives you better FPS due to the anti-portals inside them (not rendering things on the other side).

It will be a while before the next update, I've done maybe 1/5th of all the tunnel lights and gotta go through and remove the switches too.

lol i know. well i can tell u this, with everything at its highest setting and res at 1280x1024 its def eye candy. i might just start playing like this. i mean im gonna pay for it fps wise, but looks sexy :) even hospital looked sexy. only thing i dont like is the lettering in the chat is small. im old for gosh sake (34) i wear glasses but the words this small will require me to add some bifocals to the picture lol

Playing at your native resolution provides a MUCH clearer image, if you scale down, you really lose quality. You can, however, try to regain some quality by using a similar aspect ratio but smaller. I don't know how people can play this old of a game on modern hardware on low settings...

i just tried 1600x900 and its sharp and clear but the lettering again got me. i also tried (i forgot the res) and i got wide screen mode. looked really cool but this 1600x900 looks nice and tight for me

EDIT: Widescreen was 1280x800

Title: Re: [mAAp] Pipeline - Maintenance Tunnels

HP 2009 Series Wide LCD Monitor
Title: Re: [mAAp] Pipeline - Maintenance Tunnels

Your native res is 1600 x 900 @ 60 Hz, I would suggest playing at that to get the most quality if you can. The SAI won't take up half your screen then :)

yeah i noticed that, the sai looks real nice on 1600x900

Thanks killa. I think I'll take some saturation away to make them a pinch whiter. Then I need to add all kinds of stains and boxes :)

Latest looks; reduced saturation slightly, added dust bits, swapped out BSP grates for staticmesh ones that are slightly raised off the floor and they create a neat shadow that makes it pop a bit:

Old my aching ass. I have 13 years on you.    I have two bad disks in my neck and have bifocals but can't wear them when playing aa. I am constantly tipping my head back and forth trying read text and look at game. After just a few minutes It causes a lot of pain and have to quit playing. So I play without them constantly squinting trying to decide if the players are friend or enemy. I keep threatening to go find a pair of the old reading glasses they use to sell and really nerd myself up.  :style: :style:  On the up side I know there are people playing older than I am, so I don't feel so old. Mother wheres my damn Metamucil and Geritol?

I find that using a light with low brightness and radius gives good ambient lighting but no directional lighting. For that, you need a directional light that does the job of the spot on the floor. Take a look, it's pretty simple. There's 3 light actors for each light. The last is just the haze corona.
