Basically, it's an external high-quality sound card with a headphone amplifier. Most sound cards and onboard sound devices use a cheap low-quality DAC (digital to analog converter) chip which degrades the sound quality quite a bit as well as super cheap OPAMPs that aren't made for audio signals. This has a high-end DAC chip and no OPAMPs at all which is hard to find in low-cost devices. This is a great unit and a good way to get into quality audio.

They're about $250 including shipping. If someone on here wants mine, I would go $180 shipped in the US. I don't necessarily want to deal outside the US but if you really want it, we can work something out.

I'm going to be using the DAC unit on the right in that picture so I don't have a need for this NFB-12 unit anymore even though it's a great unit.
