Beyerdynamic DT770 Re-cable
« on: Sunday, January 03, 2010, 20:07:34 PM »
I had a left-over interconnect cable that I bought a while back and I decided to re-cable my headphones. The cable was originally a 7 foot shielded 4-wire Mogami Neglex terminated with Neutrik 1/8" plugs. I cut one end off and soldered it to the left driver in the headphones. I was looking at the stock cable that goes from the left to the right driver and decided to replace it as well, the first thing that came to mind was Cat5e solid core ethernet cable. Cat5 is usually regaurded high in the audio community for it's price to performance ratio. I used 4 single solid wires and went across to the right driver. Unfortunately after trying them out the right driver seemed to be lower volume but had more bass. I figured this was due to the different impedance and qualities of the 2 different cables I had used. I seeked advice on Head-Fi and came up with the solution that I should have cut the jacket off of about 1.5 feet of the Mogami Neglex and just continued 2 of the 4 wires over to the right driver. I did this and had the opportunity to make it look really nice with heatshrink and zip ties. The sound is more even and feels just right. The Neglex is a heavy cable and I ended up with 5 feet of cable between the headphones and plug which is just about right for the weight/distance in my purposes.

Here's my final result: (click on picture for a larger version)

how much better are they from standard headphones? I know nothing about audio cables and stuff so I'm just wondering.

In the hi-fi audio world there really isn't a "gaming" headphone/headset that produces quality audio (especially the 5.1 headphones). This model is actually recommended for movies and gaming due to it's sound style and closed drivers. It's bass heavy and has good positioning. It's a very popular beginners model and there's a few things you can do to it to alter the sound to the way you like.

If you're interested in purchasing a quality (in terms of build and sound) pair, I suggest checking out this thread:

I don't have the money to get that good of a pair of headphones. I also don't have a sound card either.

In this area, "quality" can cost you anywhere from probably $20 to several thousand. It's all a matter of how deep you want to go. That's what she said.

I guess that exemplifies it being universal.

And that good prostitutes cost as much as high grade headphones.
