I know its stupid but I find it fun. I got my first real chance to solder today and I enjoyed it. I soldered connectors to some fans Nate sent me years ago. Once I have a working camera I'll post up some pics.

:) It is fun when you know how to do it properly (took me a while to figure that out). Just remember to ventilate. I realize your financial situation my not allow it but, for future reference, here's "the best" solder you can get: http://cgi.ebay.com/WBT-Lead-Free-SILVER-SOLDER-3-8-10-feet-/200460663117?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eac62f94d#ht_500wt_1154
It's thin stuff and because of that it may be more expensive than other lead-free silver solder but WBT is like top dog and loved for audio and works for any other application. In my experience, 10 feet lasts quite a while for doing misc random projects. My first 10 feet lasted me about a year but it was thicker than the WBT.

I have a fair amount of solder, the only thing I know about it though is its lead-free.

:) That's what matters. I have some leaded solder, I put it in a bag with other misc lead bits that I'm gonna take to hazmat or something whenever I go.

I need to revise my title to "Soldering is fun untill you get third degree burns"

ROFL, those are just beginner badges :)

This tough guy called Majorly-Screwed is onto something, Nate.
I would be careful.

Well, I WOULD weld all my wires that I would have otherwise needed soldered but I just don't have a welder :(

I don't use a soldering iron, I use a torch.
