Recommend me a good power supply $60 and under
« on: Saturday, July 03, 2010, 11:31:49 AM »
I am planning on buying a new power supply just in case mine is too weak from me GPU. The problem is that I don't know any good PSU companies besides corsair and their PSUs are pretty much over my budget.

I was looking at these
Rosewill- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182200
Antec- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371004

Between the two, I would choose the Rosewill. Outside of the two, I wouldn't choose Rosewill. It seems like the Rosewill is made by ATNG and the Antec by Fortron. ATNG is "ok" but not great and off the top of my head Fortron isn't good.

I would say, save up some money, $60 isn't really much to get a quality power supply. I fail to remember what your current one is rated at... Here's my suggestions though that are close to your budget:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003 - Seasonic. Nuff said.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004 - Channel Well, not as good as Seasonic but is apparently getting better in newer models.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371015 - Unknown. I'm cautious about recommending this. Their older Earthwatts were great but there's word that they're made by another company now. With that said, I use one of these newer models (EA430) in my server 24/7 and it doesn't have any leaking or bulging caps and is 100% stable. There's also a EA380 in another computer that is used every day and is reliable.

If you can save up to $80 - $100 you would be looking at better options and a better built model that would probably outlive your computer.

I've got a 400w corsair right now and I am looking for something with more watts so EVGA will stop bitching. I don't have $100 to spend on a PSU. I want the 550w Corsair but I just don't have the money to buy it. I'll consider saving up for it.

Well the 450-watt would be an upgrade, especially if yours isn't a Seasonic. Power supplies are a tough thing though. You can get one rated at X that's made terribly and probably only does X for .5 seconds inside a freezer or something. They tell you what they think the ratings are based upon their test results. They don't tell you how they're tested. Seasonic is one of those brands that is consistently close to or better than spec not to mention excellent build quality.

that's mine right now. I'm not sure how to tell what company manufactured it.

You can tell who made it by looking at the label:
http://images17.newegg.com/is/image/newegg/17-139-008-S05?$S640W$
By the RU there's a number. That's the UL listing number and tells who actually made it.

I'm not going to take my PSU out to read it. Too much of a hassle.

Most ways that PSU's mount, the label is pointed outward like so:

Unless it's a weird mount, you should be able to just open the side panel and peek :)

Nope. I already opened the side panel. It seems the side with the label is the once facing up.  :-\

It should be somewhere on google, although I haven't found anything on it yet...
