Title: My house is a disaster.
Post by: Archeh on Tuesday, August 03, 2010, 20:36:29 PM
Not sure where to put this topic, but I suppose it's appropriate here.

The fiasco that is my house's coaxial cable system finally gave in on me... kinda. In a (probably) unrelated note, I tried to set up my router again after it would never work before. It failed the setup and couldn't find an Internet connection, so in the meantime I decided to clean this room; I removed some of my dad's work stuff, cleaned the floors and desks, etc. When I set the modem up again, it wouldn't get a signal. I called my ISP and asked them to reset it on their side and they couldn't even reach it. I took the modem to my bedroom and found that it worked fine down there on my cable. Then I tried it in my parent's room (where they never watch TV) and it worked again. At first frustrated, but then inspired, I split the cable for more length, ran it down my hallway, set the modem on the floor across the room from my computer, and ran a 20ft ethernet to the computer. I has internet but still no wireless. ISP is coming out tomorrow. I want them to re-route my cables.

I might take pics cuz it just looks awful with cable running across the entire ground floor of my house.

So what's the ETA on our Pokemon match?

On a more serious note, that sounds pretty bad. All of the cables in my house are hidden, besides the surround sound speakers. Having cables all along my floor would drive me crazy.

Well I got into my router controls and such and it's unlocked now. I haven't turned my DS on yet but if should be working. Tonight might work >:]

yeah the cables kinda piss me off and my dog is either gonna die on them or tear the cables out of the wall. Which is worse I don't  know.

Sounds daunting. At least I think you know more than your ISP. Sometimes I wonder how in the hell people have gotten where they are and the intelligent ones are lost in the dark.

Hmm. Woke up this morning and my dad had called the ISP to cancel. Looks like we're re-running the cables, not re-locating them outside the house like I'd wanted.

It's by far cheaper if you do it yourself :)

You have coaxial cable for your internet? going round your house? We only use coax for UHF aerials and satellite dishes... for the TV.

Yea, it's a weird thing. I'm not gonna speak for AJ but I've seen that before. I dunno how it works but it's cable tv and internet in one package...

Ive had it and its not normal coaxial cable but looks/feels the same. We had it when we had comcast for our internet/phone/tv the coax cable goes to a cable modem just like a phone line would.

fiber optics where its at

Depends on how it's used and if it's in your area. Some fiber lines are shared among a street or neighborhood.
