JBL L19A Speakers
« on: Wednesday, June 29, 2011, 15:03:12 PM »
Yesterday I was given some nice JBL L19A vintage speakers.

They do need new foam surrounds but the cabinets and everything else is really in great condition.

I have ordered new foam surrounds and binding posts for the banana plug cables I build earlier. I will post back with pics when I install them. I will also order new capacitors for the crossover circuit but that will have to wait until I have funds.

Looks like some kid had too much fun pushing in the woofer :D

The wood looks pretty good considering how the woofer look hahaha

Also JBL is fucking great.

The woofers in these are 8" and they're both built better and more expensive than the one you linked Skrewy. They're JBL 116H woofers. I did disassemble them and clean one woofer, I'm just lazy with uploading pics.

New foam surrounds arrived today. I got to work gluing them in place:

The glue adhered good to the cone since the surround was under pressure so I didn't really have to hold it or anything. But gluing the surround to the basket was harder, it just didn't want to stick down. So, I looked around and found some plastic bowls that matched the diameter and width of the surround and put some heavy objects on top. I have yet to see how it went but I think it will turn out great:

Me neither... they're still not dry even sitting overnight.

Even though I can see a blob of non-dry glue, I believe the majority is dry since I can't pull the rubber decorative covers off so that tells me that the glue that seeped out underneath them is dry. I hooked them up on my desk with temporary crossover wiring (until I my binding posts arrive and until I can afford new caps). They look and sound fantastic. Unfortunately though when running a 15hz tone at loud volumes, I hear some rubbing in the left speaker. But since that's extreme movement and that should never happen in typical use, I'm going to ignore it. Here's my current setup:

Well awesome work. Its better to play speakers with music than tones, I hear running pure tones is not a good idea :D

Yea, I'm not too worried about the speakers. I did get them for free and they were made as part of JBL's middle-end home line but they still are fantastic speakers. I don't get any distortion or rubbing with average use, even with loud movies and explosions so I think it's fine.

Skrewy, I don't throw my headphones, I just log off Steam :)

I decided to buy a new surround kit (wasted $25) that comes with shims and new dust caps. Should arrive in the next couple of days. I picked up some Watco Danish Oil today and went to work rubbing the cabinets with fine steel wool and applying a few coats of the oil. Here's what they look like:

Full of life now! I may apply a few more coats but it looks great as-is.
