Hmmm, it's a wonder why someone didn't do that sooner. I don't know why but on older (P4) computers I use a larger dot and spread it a little and then wipe the tool that I used to spread (usually paperboard) on the heatsink and it seems to work. The Dell P4 units don't show a CPU temp in speedfan but loaded down I get plenty of heat out the back so I assume it works. From now on though, dot it is. Although, amount can affect more than application style.

I probably use way to much when I apply it. I do a big dot then four little ones around. I seat the hsf, then take it off and apply more where/if needed then reseat. It works for me and the TIM I use I'm not saying its the best method just what works for me.

I do what Knight does. I keep seating the heatsink to nicely align the compound.

I heard that re-seating and using the same compound will make air bubbles. But hey, if the method works, it works. There's probably several "wrong" ways to do it that are still better than the wax oem stuff :D

I only re-seat once to avoid the air bubbles. I use AS-Ceramique and its really thick so re-seating isn't a huge deal.
