1.  Is there a way to play the maps vs the AI?

2.  Is there any advantage (or for that matter, any point) in updating to 2.8.5?

1. Not currently.

2. No. 2.8.5 does not have a functioning auth system like 2.5 does.

For AI, you CAN play against them but it's a pain in the ass using "summon" from the console to get such mediocre results:

I don't know if there's any advantage to upgrading to 2.8.5. There's less security, more hackers, probably less people as well. You'd have to talk on the AA forums about it though, Assist and AAO25 is strictly 2.5.

Probably a stupid question but would there be a way to in a way "steal" the ai code from 2.8.5 or is that unavailable stuff?

Starting with 2.7 the devs found a new method for encrypting UScript, pretty much makes it unreadable and difficult to find functions let alone read the code. That's why hackers turned to C++, that and C++ is faster.

So, no, to answer your question.
