X-FI ExtremeMusic Problem...
« on: Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 00:44:54 AM »
Sup Guys...

I recently bought a new Board for my 3960X CPU, which has 2 x PCIe x16 and 2 x PCI 2.0.
As the onboard sound solution from Realtek is a real piece of crap, i thought to myself
maybe i could install my old X-FI and recover my XP sound with the x64.bat file.

But... i noticed in the manual that the X-FI needs at least a PCI port revision 2.1 to function
properly. I'm afraid that this could lead to conflicts, so my question is simple :

Does somebody have experience with that matter, tried the above to see if it works or not,
any feedback would be very welcome because otherwise, i will have to spend some cash
which i don't have atm on an external USB solution of creative labs or similar :/

thanks in advance for your input  ;)

Your Pci-e 2.1 card will work in your Pci-e x16 slot. Only thing is you will loose the benefit of the increased bandwidth a Pci-e 2.1 slot would have given you.

hmm.. As i said, my Sound card is a PCI 2.1 card, not a PCIe...
So would the card work in a PCI 2.0 slot ?

Sorry I read it wrong, but the same holds true that the PCI 2.1 is backwards compatible with PCI 2.0

Backward compatible in which direction ?

You mean that my Soundcard 2.1 should function on my PCI 2.0 slot,
or rather that a PCI 2.0 Card should function on a PCI 2.1 slot ?

Zoxee it's compatible, just install it and you won't have any issues. Just remember that if you have Win7 you need to download all drivers from Creative site since those on the CD shouldn't be compatible...

I believe you are making confusion with PCI and PCI-Express, PCI 2.0 comes since 1993 and PCI 2.1 since 1995...

Thanks Sergio, but what do you mean i'm confusing ?

You're gonna laught, but i have played until last month with the same PC
that i played on in 2005, a vapochill-cooled http://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/fx57/fx57.htm
overclocked at 3381 Ghz and running on a http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K8N-Neo4-Platinum--PCB-1-0-.html#/?div=Detail with 4GB of Ram...

This board has Four 32-bit v2.3 Master PCI bus slots, and one of them was running my
X-FI ExtremeGamer PCI 2.1 which is obviously compatible.

But my brand new board hast Four PCI 2.0 slots. There's no confusion here,
so you are sure it is still compatible Sergio ? Thanks for answering once more  ;)

love ya thx :P

btw, i already have 3 active sound devices in the control panel which are :

1. ATI HDMI Audio (unplugged)
2. Intel (R) Display Audio
3. Realtek High Definition Audio

The Realtek one is the on-board sound chip, i can deactivate it in the bios,
but should i disable the other two also before proceeding with install ?
