well, i got my game running finally, but i'm now remembering how terrible i am. don't get me wrong – i love AA to death, which is why i stuck with it for 2 years, still managing to stay below a .5 fragrate.
i want to not be a n00b. i know the maps, i have some sick headphones, and i (usually) take my time. any other tips? i know from playing in a clan back in the day that teamwork really kicks ass, but nobody really cooperates when you jump in to a random server...

Practice.

By today so-called "pro" gameplay seems to be achieved by tweaking ini's to get some faster lame crouch-to prone continous moving and don't forget to set parental settings too to get an M4 with 203s even when you choose a sniper rifle, because

Loads of camping usually also do the trick.
*sarcasm*
Going back to a serious tone, practice on moving to cover your mates back, make an effective use of all of your equipment, get to know the maps, etc. Teamspeak is a precious help if you can play with other teammates that use it (whether or not you have a mic).

AA is one of those games that is whored to death. Some people play the same maps over and over. Others play different maps but they've been playing AA for many years and don't play many other games. Then there's those people (majority of players) that look for every advantage they can from equalizer settings to graphics card settings and more. All of this really sucks the fun out of the game entirely. You have to intimately know all of the maps, glitches and tweaks just to have a fair chance with these people. AA has long lost that "hop on and have fun" feel. Try as I might, even when my KDR breaks even, I still don't have fun in AA.
-
If after 2 years you still play like you started yesterday maybe you should consider change game :P, now serious it takes time to understand AA dynamics, and some players take more time than others, as Killa said practice makes perfection. ;)

This holds true for some maps that unfortunatly are the most played (Hospital, Pipeline, Urban and Bridge of course). On many other maps even a relatively inexperienced player has some room for creating his tactics and having an enjoyable experience.

When I was nub I used to run around with a flash in my hand. Worked well but went kinda boring

This is generally what I do. Maybe it's just me but I've found the M16 to be absolutely horrible. I have MUCH greater success with a S24 or AR.

I just stick to a very basic Ak74 most of the time, scoped or not scoped. RPK sometimes (a lovely sound). i quite hate sniper rifles.
-
RPK is awesome, especially in single mode.
-
I love the rpk on non zoomed mode. But I guess it needs little practice to handle the recoil.
Perhaps u should try rushing instead of camping and surprise the enemy.

I think I might have to go cry now...

Rushing seems to be what everyone else is doing. I find that camping is often the only way to get a kill, despite the fact that most of the time everyone seems to know exactly where I am even though I haven't made a sound.

there are some magicians around... lol
When I listen to someone, I do wait to see what I can do against the enemy.

I love the AR, its all I tend to use.
learn the maps and dont always go the same way every round. It get repetitive and boring and you dont get to practice the rest of the map. and try rushing, like others have said. This will work on reflexes. anyone can sit back and camp and stare at a doorway or alley and simply wait for something to move. Close combat fire fights, if youre smart about it, should get you better at the game.
Give the AR a try...its all i use. the best part: less reloading :P

That's the point of rushing, surprise the enemy. If u camp they'll know for sure where u are
-
Rushing tends to make you die sooner though. Seems like both teams always rush, every man for himself, no strategy. If you go the long way around a map and sneak up behind the enemy, maybe you have a chance. Or maybe the OBJ will be won and you didn't die that round. Did that on Dusk many rounds yesterday.
-
the more u play the better u get. watch other players who are getting all the kills or getting the objectives.

Was also my strategy in nubtime, but mostly map was too big and enemy had rushed my side so I kept running in entire map, till I finnaly met ... a camper
-
Play mAAp maps and you have more of a fair chance because nobody knows how to play them properly. Shipment, Breakout, and mAAp Pipeline are good starts. mAAp Pipe has been modified so much that old players have to adjust to it.

I try play game die many time. I ask for help no one give. Talk to Allah, ask for great skill, Allah will grant, just like my virgins.
-
Just a few that helped me back in the day:
- Watch the more experienced players when you die. Learn their spots/tricks/tactics on the maps and try them yourself you'll pick up alot doing this.
- Youtube some nade strats for the more popular maps (urban, Bridge) really good way to pick up some cheap kills.
- Don't be afraid to flash someone is this version! they actually work (unlike 2.8 +)
- Aim High; It takes 4 or 5 bullets if you hit a player in the leg but only 2 or 3 in the chest (or 1 if you hit them in the head)
- Move around the map; if you fire a shot at someone, chances are someone heard it and they'll come looking.
- try and play or servers locally to you. Pretty much if you have a ping of 50+ (as displayed in game) or 190-200 (what it actually is) it makes it pretty difficult to actually kill someone regardless of how accurate you are.

Really too bad they were all guys. Well, maybe not a bad thing for you.

Honestly im surprised skrewey hasnt had a field day with this topic yet :P

Fixed. Now it resembles reality a bit more.
If you're not good at close quarter combat, don't just rely on shooting from abysmal distance! You would really work only as a camper and it obviously let small room for fun. Practice and learn how to move and making for teamwork instead. Always move along with a teammate and cover each others back. You'll find yourself getting surprised by the enemy a lot less often.

About those dropshots, I was wondering, is it only on hosp that u can't dropshot? Or is it only on bridge that u can?

There is Square :)

I believe that you did not fulfill his expectations of shenanigans run rampant.
