Normally you need a server with just windows on it... Then you log-in to your server using remote desktop connection and install assist.
Then you use remote desktop connection to go in and manage your server.

This can also be done on linux servers with VNC X session, tho this is not something most people can handle on their own.

I still think if there were an automated command line program (like the original AA servers) then gameserver companies like AOWC would be able to host servers no problem.

Johnny if you want to get one of these going PM me the details of what is required to run (files, protocols, resources etc) and I can get to work on a windows one quickly and then port it afterwards for linux & mac.

Things you need:

Assist
AA Installed
1716 1717 ports forwarded

Then all you have to do is click the server tab in Assist and hit Start.

problem is i can't get it to show up in server list.  I have a IBook G4 with operating system of 10.5.8 (not sure if that has anything to do with it) and my router is a NetGear WNR100v2. I did some reading and i think i need a static ip and i'm not sure if i have one or not.

Static IP isn't necessary but it does make joining via the console easier. For what it's worth, I don't think mine shows up in the server browser either but I'm going to wait to ask about that until Jonny is done with the Auth system :)

You can't run a 'proper' server on a mac, It does not support punkbuster server. What you can run is just a fun server with not PB or Auth. If your server list does not show up in the list try a different router or use a packet sniffer to investigate the packets, You should see a packet fly off to gamespy master on port 27900 udp, Track that and see what happens to it.

Do we need to forward that for a port?

You need to open an outgoing port if you have a firewall for outgoing connecions, Normally all outbound traffic is passed. Outbound ports should be 27900 20046 UDP
I once had a router that simply would not forward this packet, The only solution was to get a different router.
