Title: First post: Is UEVR allowed for single player/on a privately hosted server?
Post by: PVT_Pops on Sunday, August 25, 2024, 21:04:53 PM
First off, I would like to thank everyone in this community for their work preserving what is, in my opinion, the best iteration of the America's Army project.

Forgive me if this has been asked: Is AAO25 still built on the Unreal Engine and, if so, would I get myself banned for trying to play the training scenarios using Praydog's Unreal Engine Virtual Reality injector? Likewise, if this proves viable, would it be possible to host a private server where people can run the UEVR injector without everyone getting banned in the process?

As this application does fundamentally alter the way you experience the game (in VR, potentially with 6DOF  control of firearms) it could be argued that it gives a player an advantage. As no VR rig has decent resolution, and it would likely make aiming harder, I'd argue it would be a choice to deliberately set yourself up with a disadvantage as a trade-off for the VR experience.

For reference, Praydog's UEVR project may be found here:

(Mods, please feel free to delete that link if deemed inappropriate. I supplied it specifically for Mod/Admin investigation relating to my question)

Many thanks,
PVT_Pops

This may come as a surprise to you but, AA2 is a lot older than the project you're referencing (around 2 decades older, in fact). America's Army 2.0 was released November 6 2003. On Unreal Engine 2.
UEVR was started (at least on GitHub) in September 2022. That's 19 years later. Currently it supports UE versions 4.8 - 5.4.

So yes, AA does run on Unreal Engine. But it's an old version of the engine, so it would not be compatible with new things like URVR.

Therefore, the underlying question becomes moot, unfortunately.

I'd be super impressed if you could get it to work. AA 2 is based on UE2 and as far as I'm aware UE didn't get proper VR support until UE4.

Thanks for the feedback. I've seen some people claim they could get some older UE releases running with the injector but thought it best to ask permission instead of forgiveness (after a ban). The odds are against me, but I'll see if there's a VR solution out there (UEVR or otherwise).
