How can you tell how many people play computer games before you buy it? Status updates?????

If it's an offline game, it doesn't really matter.

If it's a multiplayer game, you can just google it.
Plus, it's fairly easy to assume that newer games that have a high rank on these ranking websites might have more people playing them than old games or games with a low rating.
