So Vikraal messaged me earlier today asking if I knew the FPS I got in Snakeplain. Not having played it for many many months and curious myself, I extracted 2.8.5 (I keep several versions in fresh-install-compressed state) and checked it out. After having to manually edit resolution just to get it to start, I got into the settings and set everything on the highest value. I then loaded Snakeplain and messed around for a bit and was happy with the results, at least until I got towards the main building area. I saw something shocking; 42FPS in some areas. I thought: "this can't be right". So I closed the game and re-loaded it but this time with GPU-Z and Task Manager going in the background so I could check various core usage. I was shocked again; 34FPS.
Just to prove it:

Is the game that poorly done that it doesn't use 100% of any CPU core or more than half of my GPU but still drops frames? I think so.
-
Is it using all 4 cores there?
-
I think UE3 is the first version to take advantage of multi-core CPU's.
-
So are Intel chips able to load balance one thread across all CPU cores, or is that just something else loading the other cores?
-
I don't know. I had Chrome open with a bunch of tabs...
-
Do you have v-sync enabled?
-
Always. There's no reason why it shouldn't cap at 60 though.
-
You should try disabling it and see if it makes a difference.
-
It shouldn't. FRAPS updates like 1000 times a second so you can see where FPS is exactly and there's no set points like 60, 30, 20, 15 and so fourth. I do use triple buffering (default on newer Nvidia cards) but even still, 55FPS is, to me, the same as 60. I think the majority of the problems in the level is the abundant amount of poorly-coded AI features (as well as being offline, you should know by now that things in AA 2.x replicate differently offline than they do online). In my Pipeline, I have the same problem, it doesn't max anything out, the engine just can't do it. I do blame some of this on the devs because... they coded the AI (not their first time doing this) and made the map.
I guess the moral is; some games are ported, some games are rushed. Either way, faster and newer hardware won't overcome the issues.

could someone, (either here or in a new topic) explain to me in idiots terms what the graphic options i can change in games are, v-sync, preload player skins etc etc etc and explain to me the benefits and the bad parts... cos i have no idea, course i know what some is, anti ailsing makes curves more curvey, uhh, draw distance makes it draw stuff further away :)
or shall i continue to dwell in ignorance?
I thought Aussies were so smart? Now you are asking for an American's help? Imagine that. :D
Anyways, Vsync just syncs the frame to make smoother gameplay Less shearing and tearing. Dynamic lighting makes light look more realistic. Decals enables weapon scaring. If you hover your mouse over it it sometimes gives you a brief explanation of what it is. I have no idea what projectors are though. :-\

V-Sync, if I'm not mistaken hard sync's your FPS with your monitors refresh rate. Most LCD monitors are either 59hz or 60hz so most people cap at 59 or 60 fps. My Vizio monitor is really a TV so its refresh rate is 30 hence why I don't use V-Sync. Now if you are on an old CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) monitor you could have refresh rates any where from 59 to 250. So V-sync on a CRT could be really awesome if you have a great computer or really crappy if you don't.
Edit:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_synchronization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_synchronization)

Everything looks right so far. But, Knight, you do realize even if you don't sync, you're still only seeing 30FPS? You should use Vsync because there's no issues with triple buffering.
For vsync, this is a good article: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=928593
Killaman and Skrewy, projectors are textures that are projected onto another texture. Common examples of this would be:
Black explosion marks left by grenades and 203's
Detailed outside shadows on the terrain on Pipeline
Decoration/dirt/cracks on various buildings
In the picture below, the buildings have been turned blue so you can see the dirt/cracks projectors on them:

I don't recall if turning them off eliminates ALL of them from the map or just newly created ones such as explosion marks and bullet decals.

Some projectors can be set to render even if you turn off the projectors setting. The less important ones like cracks and rust won't render.
I dont know about weapon scarring though. Decals are just projectors made from weapons, but I don't know if turning off projectors turns off decals.
-
That you only see 30fps is bs, I can tell 30fps from 60 and 60 from 120. And the only game's I don't run Vsync are shooters like cod4 where some jumps/climbs you can only do with certain fps.
-
It's not BS. If your monitor's refresh rate is 30hz then it's only changing 30 times a second.

AA is dead for me now. Just got done playing about an hour of Pipeline and had some problems. I played on the pick your gun server (or maybe one of many?), and everyone was whoring the RPK and SF while I used the M16. Objectives were turned off. I was told that "killing is the objective" and sarcastically replied "well aren't you a realist". They didn't like that :\ After an admin killed his teammate and his score was brought down to like -400 or so, he reset the scoreboard so that it wouldn't go toward his tracker, presumably.
What happened to playing for the experience and enjoyment of playing?
*EDIT*
To clarify, one of the admins even understood my comment about the other admin and said something about how the military has set objectives before they go in and kill everyone (this guy must have went to Harvard). Then, he said that he didn't understand how that was relevant.

You played on the UN server? Seems like someone didn't get the memo. :-\ Do you wonder why most of the decent people on AA do not play on pick your own gun servers? The admins are idiots and the servers suck even worse. Most people just steer away from them.
Bottom line, don't play on modded servers and you can have some fun.
-
I miss the good ole days of the uRm fun servers :D getting on top of the towers on bridge and sniping people with M9 rockets... :'( I miss those times.
-
Aye, t'were the good ol' days.

You could just download massive hacks and go to servers you don't like and then just rape it repeatedly. Maybe you'll teach them something.

:D :D The UN server has been hacked numerous times. They are used to it.

Permanent take-down maybe?

I think Nate has some experience here. "FUCK SN! FROM FLS"
