Title: Need for Speed Shift
Post by: Spanky on Friday, December 04, 2009, 20:41:48 PM
I've been following the NFS franchise ever since I bought Carbon, although I have played older ones as well. NFS Shift is the current version and I can say without a doubt it is the best one. Pro Street was supposed to be the next best thing but along with others, I just disliked it. It just didn't seem fun. Undercover was the next one after Pro Street and although better (and set in a free roam world) the graphics were just lacking for a game of it's time. Shift is another story, the graphics are superb, they really went overboard with the textures. The features really make you feel like you're the one driving. I have my camera set inside the car to be more First Person and when you accelerate, shift, brake, turn or hit something the camera moves exactly like you would expect it to due to momentum. To accentuate this, the HUD also moves. I believe that the NFS line is treated by EA somewhat like Activision and Call of Duty where there's 2 different sub company's that alternate making a release. I see no problem with this however it seems that there's 2 different driving styles now. Pro Street and Shift are more about actual professional races whereas Undercover and Carbon are kind of free roam run from the cops. If you like racing, I highly recommend this game. The only downside that I have with it is that EA went cheap and only licensed the code for PhysX to be used on the CPU so this game EATS CPU clocks. It easily maxes out my Dual Core 3.2GHz.

Some Screenshots: (highest settings including Anti-Aliasing running at 1680x1050)

These two are on a straight-away, they are excellent shows of the effects. The first shows the blurring of the dash at high speed to simulate focusing on the road. The second (compared to the first) shows the camera closer to the dash as I'm braking for the turn. The text and screenshots cannot emphasize the awesomeness of the features.

I disagree. Either Underground 2 or Most Wanted are the best in the series. I also liked Hot Pursuit 2.

also, how does this game play on a keyboard? Or do you have a controller? I find it hard to steer in racing games with a keyboard.

Most Wanted was pretty good but have you tried Shift? The features and graphics alone make it miles better. I play with a PS2 controller. I played Carbon with a flight yoke and pedals but it just was more difficult to setup and manage than a smaller controller. I probably wouldn't play racing games if I didn't have a controller. Keyboard buttons are on/off, controllers you can have levels and only turn the wheels partway or accelerate slow or brake slow.

Call me old fashioned but I liked need for speed 2 the best, Racing lotus and Ferraris around mountain and desert highways etc. The new need for speeds are just modified street cars driving around the town. I don't know if you have the term boy racer in America but in England it means kids who buy regular cars and modify then to look like race cars and them drive around England's narrow and windy streets at high speed killing themselves because they have no real driving skill.

I believe thats called a "ricer" except those are japanese cars with absolutely no after market parts for performance, just style.

I've always thought wtf the point of a low-riding civic with a body kit is in everyday travel. *sigh* So many mexicans...

@Jonny, I think Carbon had some Lotus and Ferraris in it. I know for a fact that Shift has them as well, I've just chosen against buying them because of the price to performance ratio :D

That's illegal and against forum rules.

Most of you know I try my best to not be a tightass because that's the reason why I make forums like this in the first place, to get away from forums that are run by tight-assed rule huggers, however, we need to keep some peace and also keep it legal. So... here's some basic rules:

1. No illegal talk. This includes child pornography, illegal audio/video/program downloads. Any links or topics will be edited and locked. I/we don't need kiddie fiddler catchers or unmarked black vans showing up at our doorstep.
2. Keep bashing/flaming to a minimum. I enjoy it too but it can always go too far. Chances are, you'll get a warning to tone it down but if it gets out of control, the topic may be locked. If you must bash/flame then at least provide some proof/facts with your opinions.

Rules may be updated/changed. When they are, a reply to this post will be made. Any suggestions are welcome.

Illegal is your signature, Killa.  ;D

On a unrelated note, games used to be better when they were more genuine.

Like when you had to actually go out and buy the cartridge for your "control deck" as they used to call it.

Thor, this isn't a Warez site. The original Headshot! never was either. That's about the only rule I have.

R.I.P. My Sega Genesis III and Gameboy Color...
