I know this doesn't rank as "Software-based", but I like to think this board exists for all kind of Mac-related things, in a way.
I am sure some of you have heard about it, some others have dug further on the subject, and others are simply clueless.
Apple released their new invention, the iPad --the mobile device connecting the average phone and the laptops (their words, exactly!)
Check this link:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/01/27/hands_on_with_apples_ipad_with_videos_and_photos.html
And check Apple's website, as well, if you want to read/view more.
I'd like to hear your guys's thoughts on this. Quite personally, the only reason I'd see myself using one of those would certainly be portfolio-related. For example, I could own a desk-computer laying down at my place, and carry one of these to showcase my work in interviews and as such. Apart from the showcasing-factor, that is very less ---or even nothing--- that would justify spending the hundreds on that for.
Quite frankly, I am disappointed at Apple's "progress".

Awww you included me in the post. Really I couldn't care less. Portable technology will always be portable first, in front of performance, features, looks and everything else. In fact I just bought my first laptop. It's a 5 year old HP that I paid $50 for. It does everything and more that I would need to, pretty much a 6-pound (weight dann... not money) netbook with more features for less money. Really I only see 3 markets: Laptop, phone, high-capacity music device. Amazon invented Kindle and I'm guessing this is Apple's pretty'ed version. I haven't looked at the features or specifications but I'm guessing it's a iPod Touch with a over-sized screen. If that's the case, I would say battery life is going to suffer due to backlight usage. Even if this iPad was $50, I really don't see the point. (again, I don't know specifications) It won't fit in your pocket and it probably doesn't have the features or power of a laptop. I think the Apple thin laptop would be a choice that's miles better than the iPad... but... I'm not a mainstream aestheticly-driven simple-minded person with money to burn.
-
When they come out with things like this it makes me wonder whose the guy behind all the ideas for Apple and the guy who pushes for them to happen. I will not be happy until I can tattoo a micro-computer on my arm for under $100.
-
:) I see it now. It will be a gel-covered microchip in the shape of the bitten apple.
-
For once, I'll agree:
I'm not a mainstream aestheticly-driven simple-minded person with money to burn.
If you look it up, you'll see that they did do a great job in terms of battery, performance, screen and operational system.
That aside, the rest is relatively irrelevant.
I'm really fucking disappointed at how Apple has became a main-stream "fancy" company.
-
Like how every American now thinks that wearing Gucci makes you rich. Apple is the OS/Hardware equivalent.
-

this is true. I like how people think they are better than you just because they own a mac, as if the mac itself makes they more classy.
-
While I would love to continue bashing Apple, let's not forget the original post.
-
I wasn't expecting that from you, Nate :o
Jolly, our MSN conversation did somehow sort an effect on ya, huh?
Just busting yer balls. Anyone seen/read the articles yet?
-
Now that I actually read it, it looks like a good tool to present my warez collection to everyone.
Also, they need to move away from the iPhone-esque OS on the iPad. I could install Linux on it and do miracles like cure cancer.
-
I could install Linux on it and do miracles like cure cancer.
And serve drinks on a custom-colored tray.
-
That actually had me bursting in laughs!! Good grief, good grief.
No chance of having a discussion taking off on this, eh?
-

And serve drinks on a custom-colored tray.
Hahahaha! lmao where do I remember seeing Pee-Wee serving drinks on the iPad?
-

LMAO
Does anyone know how the monitor compares to the mac desktop computers?
-
Probably not as good since it's portable. I would imagine the desktop ac-powered ones are higher quality and resolution.

I've seen it running the new Need For Speed; it seemed OK. Either way; more of Apple unnecessary inventions: http://www.theonion.com/content/video/apple_introduces_revolutionary
Right. I understand technology must evolve throughout attempts and whatnot. I also understand we are entering on a new phase; and just like the post-war period where a lot of unnecessary gadgets were invented, we too will be going that way pretty soon. What is REALLY fucking me up is how Apple is pricing this "attempts" to cross the limits. It's okay to pay for a OS and hardware, but we shouldn't ---in absolutely no way--- have to pay for their own will to experiment further.
Sure. Apple wants to always be a step further, and I understand and appreciate that (to a certain extent!) ---But hell no, this is getting wary-out of hand. I'm seriously considering dropping my faith on Macintosh/Apple. I've been a frequent user since my early 5, and have always stood side by side with their goals and evolution. Shit is falling apart now, shit is damned falling apart.
I still remember running on Mac OS 3.5 (most people in this forums probably never had a hand at it). It was a terminal-like OS running black and white. And then, not after too long (and after consecutive FREE OS updates), they launched 5.7. They revolutionised the notion of OS, introducing colour, a new drag & drop file management, etc. And did we have to pay for it, did we did we? No! Because Mac was all about open-source and free software! Obviously, as a company and enterprise, they somehow have to round a considerable amount of profit, but what they are doing now is unacceptable. Back in time, you'd never see Apple actually making money out of a OS release such as 10.5 to 10.6, no matter how further they worked on it! You would pay for an upgrade from Mac OS 7 to Mac OS 8. Anything inbetween would be for free; then again, not mattering how much the system had been enhanced. And I'm only covering the software differences here; Hardware got even worse. Apple doesn't own faster processors anymore, no better MBs, no better Graphic Cards/Monitors ---none of their old ace cards are on the table anymore, yet they still highjack their prices!
I am a 100%-supportive Apple user and I am greatly disappointed.
Considering a move-over to Windows 7, oh that I am.
At this point; Fuck Apple.
-
The Laptop looks just like an I-Pod. I just don't like the fact that theres no keys... making typing possibly slower ?
-
Not only is typing slower, as you are also dragged off of the possibility of multi-tasking.
They did create several points of reference throughout the wheel, though.
Technically, you can press several areas of the wheel at the same time; but ----
-
Dann, I only see 2 benefits (if you can call them that) for you to stick with Apple:
1. You've used it for a long time and you probably know the OS inside and out.
2. As an artist, it makes you look more professional to own a grey/white device with a half-way eaten apple on the side/front.
Other than that... there's nothing special. They're limited versions of a regular PC. Now days they use Intel and Nvidia products. You can buy a Windows-based PC and have far more upgradeability than a Mac and at a cheaper price as well. I really think Microsoft is doing well and is only going to get better. They have the Zune, Xbox and small amounts of keyboards and mice. You don't really see them trying hard to invent new products that the consumers will like even at a high price, they just build on what the consumers like now and feed the demand. Dare I say Windows Vista came at the right time to make them look bad and now Windows 7 a true masterpiece came at another good time.

Mystery to Windows Vista revealed.
-
This crap is gay lol its exactly like an itouch except just in JUMBO SIZE or laptop touch screen :o
-
Congratulations; You have brought the quality of this discussion a hundred notches down.
-
Come on Dann, he's trying to add something to the conversation via his observations.
-
Meh.
Either way; Some more interesting read.

Apple's rivals at present, are: Google, Nokia and Adobe.
Also; Remember me talking about Apple producing their own chips/CPUs, Nate? I've read rumours it might actually happen, as they have now bought yet another factory.
-
i dont know bout nokia or adobe, i would worry more about google as apple's rival since they are getting pretty big
