Hate Windows Vista?
« on: Thursday, December 03, 2009, 21:38:47 PM »
There is absolutely no reason why everybody shouldn't try Windows 7. It's time to give up XP, it's too old. Vista was and still is great. The problem was that people still haven't realized you can't upgrade and upgrade software without getting newer hardware. Try running a modern game on a Pentium 3. It probably won't even start. There were driver mess-ups with Vista but still, it was a very solid OS. Windows 7 is much better. Everything is easier to use and customize and I can't even count the features that I love. Yes it will require more RAM to run but... it's totally worth it and if you don't have enough RAM to run it, I don't know how you're able to browse the web on XP. If anybody has any questions about it, feel free to ask. I've been running it since before the release and I won't use any other OS for my personal computers.

Does it use less than 300MB of ram with a clean reboot with nothing but the desktop loaded?

I actually really like Vista. Sure there are a few minor bugs, but overall it a pretty good. I have been thinking about upgrading to Windows 7. The main reason I want to go to Windows 7 is because I want to get a 64-bit OS. I currently only have Vista 32-bit. I also hear that Windows 7 runs a bit faster than Vista.

I'll have to launch up a Virtual Machine and check that out for you. Do you want to know 32-bit or 64-bit?

@ Killaman, I looked up benchmarks and if I recall right, Windows 7 out-performed both Vista and XP in several benchmark tests. XP was a little harder to beat but it was mostly either on-par or better than it. 64-bit OS's are awesome and there is no reason why people should hesitate to have them.

The only reason I am hesitating on getting Windows 7 64-bit is that it is $120 for the upgrade. and no, I'm not gonna pirate windows 7.  ;D

Good, Microsoft deserves the support for releasing an excellent OS.

64-bit is fine, since I only use 64-bit anyways.

And without them you would only be able to use 3.5GB out of your 6GB total RAM, Spanky.  :)

*cough*8GB*cough* :D Also, on Windows anyway, the 3.5GB usage I believe is determined by your GPU memory amount as well. It's a whole mess. For some it's 3.2GB for others it's 3.5GB. Either way it's messed up and worth it to upgrade.

Well still on a 64-bit system you can have a total of a billion, million terabytes of memory, if not more.

Here's a screenshot of a freshly installed copy of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on boot-up:

Not bad, definitely better than Vista. I'll have to reboot and get the numbers for Ubuntu.

A fresh install of Ubuntu will use about 238MB of RAM. Screen Shot Seems to hold steady at that too, unless I do something.  :)

I think that Windows 7, like XP, still has a dynamic usage of RAM. Meaning, if you have more RAM, it'll use it, if you have less RAM it'll use less. So obviously values won't be consistent among different levels of RAM.

Who let this trouble maker in here :D

Anyway, it should have been worth noting that I ran Windows 7 in a VM with 2GB of ram...

I can run XP on a VM on a 128MB stick so........... =)

But then again, every version of XP I test is modded heavily.
