DiRT 2
« on: Friday, December 18, 2009, 17:44:10 PM »
Does anyone have it? I currently have the original DiRT and can't wait to get the new one. It's been looking pretty awesome with the effects but I saw a screenshot today that just blew me away:

I can't find anything wrong with it! No obvious polys, no low-res textures... Nothing!

yeah. It supports DX11 so it has some amazing graphics. Too bad I can't run it like that.  :-[

The textures on that car alone would use of all my video memory, all 256MB of it. That's just how nice it looks.

I just got this game and while the graphics are awesome as well as the features and the whole "getting started" I do have some nit-picking:

Foliage, especially grass is STILL 1-poly always-face-camera bullcrap. It was like this in the original DiRT and while you don't notice it when you're driving fast, I sure can when they are doing fly-bys and whatnot.
Dust and water kick-up textures are low resolution and it shows. This is about as annoying as the orange blood drops you see that never change on the screen in Call of Duty.

Overall though, it's a great game. Coded very well. I'm surprised I can play it on my dual-core CPU still. Yea, it's maxed out but with all the settings on high, I'm above "playable" FPS which ranges for me 25-40 depending on the scene. It's a little rare that I'll cap at 60 but it happens. I'm sure a new CPU would help this out... but in time... in time.

Spanky, if they did 3D grass or something, you would be getting 5-20 FPS instead of the 25-40. Oh, and it's called billboarding, when an object rotates to face the camera. In some games it's really noticeable, like in Battlefield 1942 they used it on the trees, you could stand under them and rotate your view and watch the leafs rotate with you.  :)

Yea, but it's still a shame... It was really bad in the original DiRT especially when I spun out :P

Here's a video I did, it's not the greatest but it shows some nifty real in-game stuff:

I use a PS2 controller from my old PS2 that I sold many moons ago. I just love the feel of it, all the re-makes including the ones for PC just don't compare to the tactile feel.
