Title: User created map
Post by: {G.O.W.}_Grizz on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, 10:53:09 AM
Hi all this is the old bear (Grizz). I have been playing and running AA servers for a long time. I have 4 AA25 Assist servers that I run now. A friend of mine (BlackMasses) created a map for AA 2.8.5 that we worked on for about a year getting the bugs out. It is a great map and was wondering if you all would please check it out and see what ya think. My clan still have me spool it up from time to time to play it and think everyone else would like it to. Thanks the old Bear, Grizz.

I tried downloading it to Maps folder, and opening it with ArmyOps.exe, but opening this map from ArmyOps.exe just gave me errors.  Other maps load fine.

"Ran out of virtual memory. To prevent this condition, you must free up more space on your primary hard disk."
I have an SSD with a really small page file (400m).  I'm guessing something about the size of the map vs the pagefile?  I didn't know AA required alot of VM but seems to work fine for other maps.

Did you run it on 2.8.5? Because that's the version it was made for and that's the one it will work on.

And I don't think opening maps 'with' armyops.exe has ever worked. What you need to do is start armyops.exe and when it's loaded type
Code: [Select]
start mapnameit should be
Code: [Select]
start OBTif the filename is corret in the link.
You can also use 'open' instead of 'start'.

That's what I did.
Went to start-> typed in ArmyOps.exe, found the version in Assist, opened that folder, went up a folder and dropped in Maps, then ran ArmyOps.exe and used the 'open' command.  'start OBT' doesn't work either

Opening in the 2.8.5 editor worked fine for me.

That's exactly what I said you SHOULDN'T do. Assist runs on 2.5, but what I said was to use 2.8.5.

Reason is, 2.8.5 maps are encrypted and AA 2.5 doesn't know how to read that stuff so all the regular map information is like, in another language and it crashes because it doesn't understand.

I know, that's why ELiZ made the converter. Because of that in order to play/test a map made for 2.8.5 you need to use that version of the game (or the equivalent editor).

Never mind.  That's what it was, the 2.8.5 version somehow escaped my attention, as bad as it is   :?

Here is the map converted to 2.5
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/62876385/OBT25.zip

You will not be able to run this map online in 25Assist, and when launching the map offline, you start in the airplane without parachute, so I had to ghost to ground just to explore.

A good reason why the editor isn't public and why custom maps aren't automatically allowed in Assist. While a lot of people have good ideas and good intentions, it takes a lot of time and skill to execute them properly. I hate to sound harsh but there's a lot of shit maps out there.

yeah. but thats a good way for people to learn the right way, wrong way and also how to fix existing issues IF they continue learning on the map their making. Most will just finish a map and so ok thats good enough when in reality good enough doesnt make it playable in other players minds. ntm almost all maps have some stuff that could be fixed. But optimization should probably always be the first thing you fix in a map that someone else made (you know the whole issue of walls set to anti-portal and zone portals not set right and other such things). just my opinions but im not even no where close to being a master of the editor. I make tons of mistakes as im sure most of us do from time to time. lol

Rapture, the only mistake you make is thinking there are mistakes in UnrealEd. Everything breaks/crashes/glitches for a reason. That reason is because satan himself coded the engine and trolls level editors to insanity.

exactly. There are mistakes  in UnrealEd. the mistake is in whoever coded it. Satan codes a program that crashes and everything else. UnrealEngine is LOCO

This is different from the explanation you gave me.

I will spool up the map on my server tonight if anyone would like to check it out. You will have to join in by ip cause it is running on LAN, the ip is 24.75.167.253:1728. Thanks for converting it men.     The Grizz.
