Title: Running a server - more difficult now - counter productive to growth?
Post by: 82nd_DXO_COL=Shad on Saturday, January 11, 2014, 17:40:47 PM
Just a quick note.  I've been asked to help install servers on Windows from a few people now and it strikes me that it is a more difficult process to do now for those technologically timid folks.  Before, all you had to do was click a few buttons.  Now, you have to unhide windows directories, change directory, rename files in dos, unzip files manually, ect.  Pretty easy to do for some of us, but not for others.   I'm not sure if the goal was to keep non-dedicated people from running servers or what, but seems to me that this might be counter productive to growth.  What was the reasoning for it?

If you use the Assist Server Manager, you have to press exactly 2 buttons to have a server up and running

Button 1: Create Server
Button 2: Start Server

Just to add, you open the same ports. Reason to make it easier, which is easier than before.

but be sure, if you start the server on port 1716, you should not have assist running on the same server at that moment.
first start server, then start assist. all good, enjoy

eh I never installed a windows server from Assist before and I remember reading somewhere about it being taken out and just misunderstood.  People were asking me about the  README instructions (http://aa25assist.sourceforge.net/download.php (http://aa25assist.sourceforge.net/download.php)) which describes a whole seperate process.
I'll refer them to that forum then.

A lot of the information on that website is outdated, unnecessary or already on this website. I just setup a PHP header redirect on that site to bring users here. All links to the sourceforge will now bring people back here. For future reference for anyone that wants to re-enable that site, the redirect is in the header.php file.
