.exe application won't do anything
« on: Thursday, August 22, 2024, 03:06:19 AM »
Hi! A long time player, a long long time ago! found my tracker profile still exists. My issue is that after I extract AA25Assist, and click on the application, the mouse wheel spins for a second and then nothing happens. Ever.

Any solutions or known reasons why this could be happening?

Thanks!

This is an old application. You might want to try and run it as administrator.
The application wasn't necessarily designed to only run correctly when run as an administrator, but it was created before permissions were handled in the modern way. Which means that it may not be able to achieve what it's trying to do without these elevated permissions.
That is to say, we've seen running the application as an administrator work where running it normally doesn't.

PS:
You do not know us. You do not know the intricate details of this piece of software. Running an application as an administrator can pose security risks. So you'll have to judge it based on your own risk tolerance.

"25Assist Libs" folder must be in the same place as the 25Assist.exe

Fair enough, although I have tried running it as administrator and get the same result.

Folders are in the same place. Clicking "extract all" and finding a folder to put them should be all it takes, right?

Unless you are on linux, yeah, should be enough

Hmm... No one else has run into this issue? So weird. I'm on Windows, I'm not sure what else to try.

Which version of Windows are you running?
Do you have an anti virus installed (apart from Windows Defender)? If so, are you able to check if the file is blocked from executing?
Check your event viewer for any errors that may be related.
Also try running the application in compatibility mode (Doubtful it would help, but worth a shot).

Windows 11.

I have Norton but it doesn't say it has blocked anything (not sure I'm looking in the appropriate place). No application event errors, or other issues that look related.

Compatibility mode - no change.

Is there a security history (or something of the sort) that may display a list of applications blocked from executing?. You could try temporarily disabling Norton and seeing if the application will start. Alternatively, I'm sure there is a way to allow an application through Norton.

From what you've mentioned I would assume that is the likely culprit, but as I haven't used Norton in probably near twenty years, I can't offer much assistance apart from what I've suggested above.

Honestly I don't think that's the issue. Norton isn't blocking anything and finds no risks with the aa25 files.

I would never pay for Norton but get it free through work so it's whatever.

I figured it out. For any future users, right click on "Properties" for the .exe file. There was a text box that said something like "This file came from another computer" and there's an option to 'Unblock'.

See you all out there, this will be nostalgic as heck. I was 13-18 when this game was a big part of my life. Now I'm 35!

Spoke too soon, one more issue ->

"Error setting display mode: CreateDevice failed (D3DERR_INVALIDCALL). Please delete your armyops.ini file if this error prevents you from starting the game."

Edit: Didn't really change much but made it into a server. Maybe false alarm? Also noticed my honor is at 17 instead of 110. Guessing honor got reset at some point in time? No big deal, I actually don't care, more just curious.

Honor wasn't reset unless you created a new account.

In fact, I've checked, and you do have 2 accounts. The other one has the login name "[except!on]".
