Title: District
Post by: aao25.com on Tuesday, July 28, 2015, 11:55:22 AM
Is there a way we can work on this map. Its a tiny map, yet most people get extremely low FPS.

Using the the command nate posted you can see that this map has more resources than some of the largest maps in the game by 2x or more. I'm wondering if lowering that might help with FPS?

It probably would, but it would also mean that the map would loose it's detail.

I'm not sure whether or not Spanky has already gone over the map trying to optimize it as he did with AA3 maps. There's a limit as to how far you can go with that, of course (as is evident from AA3 maps as well).

I don't see how there is a limit. Maps like pipeline are a lot larger and the details are fine and players pull 90FPS+, you go to district and those same players get 20.

Regular pipe has very few details to be honest.

I never touched district. I'm pretty sure it was a 2.8.5 convert that ELiZ did.

what are you calling details?

lol, but seriously, i mean if your going to convert maps, why not take the time and make them playable.

Just take a look at the cover shots for the 2 maps:

Compared to District, Pipeline looks just plain. You can clearly see more details in District.
And of course Pipeline has more details inside, but it's still got less than the newer maps.
You can see how regular Pipe has a lack of detail by comparing it to Spanky's mAAp Pipeline.

Nobody's forcing you to play the map.

Compare District to PCR, PCR = 90 FPS / District = 20

I just don't understand how a smaller map can be so large that it has that big of an effect on users gameplay.

Nobody's forcing you to play the map.

This is the standard, I'm lazy and don't want to do anything response around here. People like the map and want to play the map.  People have a hard time due to the extremely low FPS. You should be happy that people take the time to help you improve and give feedback.

I'm not saying that it can't be optimised. I'm saying there's limits to what can be done.

Bare in mind that we manage this project out of our free time for no other benefits. I know Spanky knows how to optimize maps, but I'm not sure if he's got time, what with that upcoming court and stuff (that's right, I know, Spanky :D).

Because that's not always a realistic goal. District has a lot of detail for a map with no distance fog. Hell, being night time alone makes it harder on FPS. I'll look at it again and see if there is any optimization to be done (doubt it) but aside from simply removing objects and details there isn't much that is possible.
AA2.5 is on a very old engine. District ran fine in 2.8.5 because it has the added benefit of DX9 and other graphical features missing in our engine. If you look at the AA3 converted maps they suffer in the same way as far as FPS goes.

Well thats what i mean, when converting make them work for our engine. I know this would make the conversion time take twice or three times as long, but it quality > quantity.

As far as District goes, look at this

I think that can be cleaned up a bit?

What exactly are you seeing that you think can be cleaned up?

Going through the editor real quick, there's a TON that can be improved on this map. There's excessive detail outside the map and I'm willing to bet that a fair amount of optimization can be done without sacrificing detail inside the playable area.
